No weight gain in 9 mth old baby

My daughter is almost 9 months old. She was introduced to solid food at 6 months. She is now on 3 solid meals a day and breast milk 4 times a day (~9 to 12 oz).

She used to be on the 75th percentile on the growth curve when she was exclusively breastfed. Since being weaned, she has hardly gained any weight. At 31 weeks she was 7.8 kg (50th %tile), at 34 weeks 8.01 kg (50th %tile) and now at 38 weeks, she's only at 8.06 kg (25th %tile).

She looks and seems healthy. She is picky when it comes to food, but always finish what is offered. I'm worried that I may not be feeding her enough or that I should supplement her feeds with formula.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I would download the breastfed baby weight chart and go off that.
It's probably just because she is so active now and is just using up her energy. I wouldn't worry about it too much, she is gaining slowly and isn't losing weight. I think it is probably normal for her age from what I can remember.

Thanks for the messages.

It has been frantic cause my DD has just gotten her second cold this year. She's still as active as ever, commando crawling everywhere but is refusing all solid food.

Taking her to the GP today just to make sure she's ok.

Its likely that the slowing down in weight gain is due to a combination of factors.

  • she has started moving, which burns more calories
  • she has had 2 colds and been eating less solids
  • its normal for BF babies' weight gain to slow down at around this point

The GP will be able to rule out any medical cause that needs attention, but remember they are not experts in infant nutrition!

My dd gained no weight at all over a 4 month period at around the same age. She's now a very 'solid' 2.9 yr old.
