Finally getting off the fence; 26m DS going for MMR tomorrow. Feel a bit sick...

After literally, a year of faffing, arguing backwards and forwards, research and more research, we've finally opted to give DS the MMR tomorrow.

I'm not happy about it and am terrified that it will affect him negatively - but I figure that I'd be equally edgy even if we had given him singles, and more so if he actually got measles. Which he might do by default if we fanny about much longer.

I'm just plagued by the idea that it might be the wrong thing. Odds are it'll be alright, aren't they? This is my last minute dither, and then hopefully I can stop posting these "should we, shouldn't we?" posts...

you are completely doing the right thing. he will be fine.

and is he likely to be less affected now he's older? Or does it not work like that?

My Ds is 20 months and hasn't had it yet. I've been putting it off because of his allergies.

I'm swaying towards giving him it.

Well, yes, of course the odds are that he will be completely fine.

And I can't pretend to have retained half the highly authoritative material that a MN poster has painstakingly shared, but as I understand it, the only suggestion of risk is if you have a high degree of atopic conditions in your family, a genetic disposition to ASD, and/or the child was on anti-biotics as a newborn.

Had I read MN before DS had the MMR I would have thought twice - my family and I have a full range of atopic conditions, and he was on IV anti-biotics from birth.

He did have the MMR...(I have one friend deaf and one visually impaired as a result of measles)...and he is fine!

what's an atopic condition? I thought the only possible concern was if you had family history of auto-immune disease. and that was still ridiculously low. (we have said history, dds still had mmr)

My HV just said to me that DS is due MMR at 13 months (he is 11.5 months just now), I assumed you have to get it then to minimise risk to MM&R? Also, I asked her about the latest research and she said the original scaremongering study only involved 13 kids (who were also at risk of ASD anyway) and that contributed to the Dr researcher being struck off. Also, there is a recent Japanese study that involved 5000 kids and there was no evidence for increased risk of ASD. I trust my HV, what do others think of this? Is assume she is telling the truth and from what I have read myself I think the MMR is fine, so I'd go for it before DS catches something!

hatwoman - mmmm - you are probably right - I'm not sure if there is an overlap in menaing between atopic and auto-immune...but I think you're right and it's 'auto-immune' that is the one to consider. They are both definitions of immune system responses, but I don't know the difference . My family has auto-immune and atopic conditions...

can of worms, ILikeYourSleeves. Have a look at some previous mmr threads; there's more knowledgeable people than me who have concerns enough to make me delay this long...

Ha - after all that, DS1 woke up with a rotten cold and won't be getting it today after all! The irony...
