Hand, foot and mouth disease - what are the symptoms?

Anyone any experience of this?

DS (2.2) has had red spots round his bottom and penis for a couple of days now and has also had a cough for a couple of days. Tonight, he started complaining of a sore mouth - he has all his teeth so it can't be teething. I have given him some Calpol and he seemed ok and has gone to bed quite happy.

Not sure what it is - just thought it may be Hand, foot and mouth disease.

mild childhood disease caused by caused by a virus called the coxsackie A virus. Some cases are caused by coxsackie B virus and enterovirus 71.

He had a temperature and was a bit listless for one day, didn't seem to get it too badly in his mouth but had the spots (like blisters) on top side, rather than palm of hands, and a few on feet. Nowhere else though. He made a quick recovery but DH and I both got it. Hope you work out what it is and that your LO feels better.

Thanks for the replies - no sign of any spots on hands and feet but his bottom has tons of spots on it. I guess I am wondering if they always get spots on their hands and feet?

Really hope it isn't that as I am 30 weeks pg and although it would appear not to be dangerous to pg women, would much prefer not to catch it!

spots hand/or feet.severity and number vary,usually no risk when pg but can elevate your temp but do see gp if you think you have it and are worried

ceebee - DS had it a few weeks ago. He was off his food for a few days as his mouth was so saw. The nurse said DH & I had prob had it when younger, and neither of us caught it.

Ice/ice lollies quite good for numbing things if DS's mouth is sore. DS also went through quite a lot of yogurt.

DD had it a while ago. She had a few blisters on her hands and feet, but far more on her bottom. She also dribbled a lot because of the ones in her mouth. But she was only out of sorts for about 24 hours - the blisters lasted a few days, but she was her usual self on day 2. On day 1 she would only eat yoghurt - probably nice and soothing for her mouth.

I am fairly sure my ds has developed hand foot and mouth today... he has literally been screaming every time he tries to eat anything but yoghurt (he has all his teeth), is very off colour and complaining of a sore tongue (which looks like it has a sort of spotty rash). At 33 weeks pregnant with chronic spd, very low iron levels and a stinky cold i am really not looking forward to the prospect of catching it (my bro caught it from his ds so i doubt i had it as a child either... we were brought up in quite a sterile environment )

Can anyone reassure me that it is not dangerous inlate pregnancy to a non-immune mum? Am feeling a little concerned.

Just to reassure you, the doctor told me that it is not dangerous for pregnant women - if adults catch it (although he said he has never seen an adult with it) it is really mild - so please don't worry.

I hope your DS is ok. Mine is absolutely fine now - although he still has spots round his bottom and a few on his feet he is back to his usual naughty cheeky self again. He was only really ill for one day on Wednesday so it does seem to be quite a short-lived illness thankfully.
