Uneven leg creases, one foot turns out when walking, hip scan tomorrow...

..and I'm getting increasingly jumpy. I don't have a good feeling about this.

dd2 is 21 months, so open surgery if her hip is dislocated - does anyone know if they tell you at the scan appointment, or if we have to wait 10 days till we see the orthopaedic consultant?

I know I'm jumping the gun, and its not the end of the world if it is hip dysplasia, but dd's been through quite a lot already and is sooo happy she can finally walk and run after her sister.

sorry, no experience of hip problems, but when DS1 has had scans in the past, we didn't get any results there and then.
we had to wait for the follow-up appt with the consultant.

Uneven creases can be a sign of CDH, but 21 months is very late to pick this up. It is the kind of thing that is noted at birth and the 2-month check.

My DD was born with CDH, and she had a couple of scans. The first one, around 2-3 weeks, was inconclusive and she had another around 16 weeks which gave her the all clear.

The sonographer that we had didn't tell us anything, but we saw the orthopedic surgeon straight afterwards.

My DD had her good hip scanned first to give a baseline, followed by the dodgy one, and it took about half an hour per side.

Thanks. dd actually had a scan (ultrasound) when she was a few weeks old (6?? I can't remember, it was delayed because she was v ill with RSV at 4 weeks) because she was breech - well, transverse to be exact.

We were told at the scan that her hips were ok, but a bit borderline ok, so recommended re-scan to be on the safe side at 6 months. When she was 6 months we were distracted by other problems with her feeding, missed the appointment and told we had to get a new referral from the GP....the GP, and the HV, at that point both said she seemed ok: symetrical, no clicks, good range of movement. So we didn't re-scan

Then she started walking and both her feet turned out, HV said to wait till she was walking properly then get her checked. One foot has straightened, the other is still turned out - though far less than it was - so we're off for scan and 10 days later orthopaedic paeds consultant.

Yo'ure right, Riven, the whole thing is pretty scary. Do you mind me asking what your dd's diagnosis was? Does she have shallow sockets, for them to be able to predict what lies ahead that way?

I've had a quick look at STEPS in case I need them....

HV sent us for an x ray with the exact same thing when DD attended her 9 month check up. She was also breech birth and had xrays done at 4 mths. Thankfully it all turned out fine and listening to other mums it seems to be a frequent occurence!

My DD was breech which caused her CDH. It all went back by itself within a few weeks. It was not a pretty sight when the paed pulled her leg out of its socket when he did the first exam.

Elibean we with our dd as still is going throuth the same picked up when dd was a day old a click in her leg leg, had to go back fora scan at 6 weeks, was sent to otherpeadics at 6 months an xray showed it was still out a little so was told to come back after 6 ms again we did last weeek had an xray befor we went to pead and he says she as shallow sockets but they noot doing any thing but we go back in feb foe same xreay and see pead. we told him dd feet turn out she limps but i think they waiting till dd is walking on her own

trace, yes, they wanted to wait till dd was walking on her own here, too. She walked independently at 18 months (dd1 at 16 months, just late walkers here I think!) and is 21 months now. Hope your dd's has sorted itself out.

Hips are ok, she's just super hypermobile hence feet turning out, wobbly gait etc. Phew. She does have one shallower socket, so will be re x-rayed in 6 months, but we can breathe again for now! dd1 is starting Reception in 3 weeks, we are hoping to move house, so it would have been horrible timing in addition to scary and upsetting anyway.

Thanks for the support, I'm much more aware of hip conditions now - not a bad thing!

My ds has uneven leg creases. He was scanned at 6 weeks as he was breech. They said everything looked ok. He's just started walking at 11 months, is there anything I should be looking out for? He's a bit like a drunkard, but I assumed that's because he's just started walking.

I think they all look drunk at that age

The consultant said uneven creases were not a problem necessarily, just worth scanning those that have them in case. Look out for one leg shorter than the other, pain, limping, etc but honestly...given what I've just put myself through with worrying...you can have a few of those (bar pain) and it can still be ok.

I suspect if your ds had had any worrying signs at his first scan, they'd have booked you in for follow-up - they did with dd, because they spotted the shallow socket when she was a few weeks old.

Elibean - thanks for advice, I'll keep my eye open, but as you say, I'm sure they would have followed it up at his first scan, they said his sockets were deep enough, so they must have been sufficiently happy to let us go without any follow up. Glad everything worked out for you too.
