Chickenpox

8 year old has chickenpox. Always intended on getting the vaccination but never managed it. Spots started appearing on Thursday 17th. I’m hoping this is officially day 3 as she is struggling. She’s exhausted as she’s not sleeping due to the itching and she’s constantly crying saying she’s in pain.

Shes having regular calpol (for temp), antihistamine and calamine lotion. Is there anything else we can do?!

also, if we are day 3, can we expect more spots?!

Your bar for perfection is incredibly low

Yup. I'm awful. Not awful enough to make myself feel better by smugly attavking a woman asking for advice for her poorly kid though.

There are some right bitches on this thread for sure.

Another vote for an oat bath and also ice lollies if you get spots on the tongue.
dh got chicken pox as an adult and tested the oat bath!

Hope she feels better soon, sounds horrible.

You have reminded me to get the vaccine (when I can afford it), although I'm not sure if some children are just immune to it? My eldest is 10 and has never had it.

MMRV has only recently been added to the schedule and OPs child would not be eligible for the free vaccine. I imagine her child has had the vaccines she was eligible to get

Yes thank you. She’s 8 and the chickenpox vaccination hasn’t been offered as standard until much more recently. She’s had all of her other vaccinations and has an annual flu jab.

Thanks for those who haven’t come on to suggest I’m an awful parent for not giving her the chickenpox vaccination that definitely is not free because she is 8.

We’ve been doing regular oat baths and changing from calamine to poxclin has made such a difference. She’s a lot more comfortable and slept well last night.

Virasoothe gel is really good for the spots. I hope your DD feels better soon.

I think some children must be naturally immune (i have no medical training) DD kept being exposed but never got it. Her brother had it mildly when she was a newborn but the dr said my antibodies protected her via breastfeeding.

I eventually got her the vaccine via Boots age 8. But £150 isn’t cheap. I completely understand why no everyone pays for it.
