Daily moisturiser recommendations for a six-year-old with eczema?

My DD (6) has eczema. She's had it since she was born. We've been to the GP many times, and when the flare-ups are particularly bad we get steroid cream, and a barrier cream to use daily. It's very harsh on her little skin though. Can anybody suggest any good daily moisturizer/lotion that's kind to eczema skin that we can use daily just to keep it soft and stop her scratching so much. My heart breaks for her. Thank you x

Aveeno worked wonders for my DS. I used the bath soak and the lotion.

Can you say what cream you already use? She should have an emollient rather than a barrier cream as they do different things.
Also what are you using to wash her with? Avoiding SLS can work wonders but it is in so many products.

Thank you. I have seen that one and was considering it so I'll definitely get some today and see how we go. It's horrible to see her uncomfortable a lot of the time x

Sorry yes it's an emollient not a barrier cream I couldn't remember the correct word. It's called Zerobase x

Lotion is weaker than cream which is weaker than ointment. The terms have a specific meaning beyond just marketing.

If you find lotion isn't enough then step up to something labelled cream.

I really like QV cream

I was diagnosed with chronic eczema in childhood and have therefore got quite nice facial skin at 55 from using moisturiser from a very young age.

I have used Clinique Overnight Mask for many years now. It doesn't contain and SPF but that doesn't matter to me as I wear foundation most days. It's a brilliant moistusiser. The best I have tried.

When young, I used plain old Astral every day and I can still use that without reacting to it, too. It's heavier and greasier than the Clinique, though.

Has your daughter had any food allergy testing done?

I recently (at 54) worked out that my problem was gluten. I had allergy testing done as a child (abt. 7 yrs.) and the list of foods was so long that they couldn't all be eliminated. I have wondered if wheat/gluten was problematic all along. Now I am GF, my skin has completely cleared up. Sun, sea and swimming pools are always great for my eczema, too.

I have just edited to add that I react to most of the stuff the GP's prescribe and always have. I think my skin it irritated by parrafin or something (I did know the exact answer to this a while ago but in essense, parraffin is used as a sealant and my skin doeasn't seem to like that much).

Does she get eczema around her mouth?

The cream that’s helped my DS’s eczema the most has been cocoa butter far more than the emollient we were given.

Let her skin breathe, and be aware that broken skin gets infections and these infections are more itchy than the eczema. Letting my skin dry out was the best way to control it.

Aveeno cream was great as maintenance for DS and the bath barrier stuff - thick and greasy can’t remember the brand though!

warninglivewithoutwarning · 10/09/2026 19:59

Aveeno dermexa specifically

We went through sooo many creams but the one that we finally settled with was Aproderm colloidal oat cream.

Similar to pp my dd worked out herself- from TikTok! That dairy was the issue in her case. She has also cut out gluten later on and her skin is now completely clear. Dh funnily enough once forced to reduce his dairy intake because we started buying and cooking DF, also found his excema cleared up.

other than that if traditional creams don’t work Chinese herbal medicine is worth a try. You need to hunt for a reputable clinic - I work in the medical field and we had a lecture by one of our Chinese (but traditionally qualified in the UK) doctors. Most of the department now treats their kids skin issues with chm and all swear by it.

Epaderm cream and ointment are the best for this. Also no soaps in the bath. Use QV gentle wash instead.

We use CeraVe moisturizer. My daughter is only 1 but we smother her body in it before bed every night and immediately after her face gets wet (like after meals or after playing in water etc). She also gets eczema on her hands and we put a lot of vaseline on her hands at bedtime and then put mittens over them. We also use 40% zinc oxide diaper cream on her face at naps and bedtime. This is very very messy though and honestly I probably won't continue with it when she moves out of her crib. But works amazingly. You can maybe put the zinc oxide paste on eczema areas of her that are covered so it's not messy.

We use Aveeno cream.

However we find Aveeno bath stuff makes them worse! The main bubble bath we find that doesn’t trigger their skin is Childs Farm
