Seven month old not yet rolling after breech birth and caesarean

my baby turned 7 months last Thursday and he’s still not rolling. He has in the past (around 4 months) He tries so hard. He stretches for items and tries to roll back to front too. He can sit unaided (little wobbly but ok) for couple of minutes. He holds objects in both hands. it’s so strange though because he sat up around for 4 months too and then just didn’t have the strength again until now.

he was breech and born via csection

Does he get plenty of time on his back, do you put toys out of reach

Dobeebeedah · 15/08/2026 20:11

He might not roll. DS rolled around floor at 4 months, then rocked back and forth on hands and knees then crawled about 7 months. DD just sat and waited for everything to come to her. Both walked at over 12 months. Mention to HV if you are worried, but milestones were not really mentioned in detail when mine were young.

Meand2Ls · 15/08/2026 20:13

None of my babies (both vbacs) rolled although they were both sitting unassisted by 4.5 months so getting them back on their back after that was mission impossible 😅. Not of them traditional crawled though (although had no problems getting where they needed to be in other ways!) and I did wonder whether that was from skipping rolling. But one of my friends have a breach section and her little girl definitely rolled on time

Lots of tummy time? Never too late to start. My babies all struggled with rolling, had to help them with the weight of their big head! You basically hold your hands around their butt/pelvis and pull down slightly to take some of the weight, it helped mine loads and they were able to roll with support and then quickly without.

hugasaurus · 15/08/2026 20:23

Some babies just don’t really roll! DD1 never bothered with it until she was well into crawling. She just sat like a little Buddha and grabbed stuff.

DD2 was rolling as soon as she could and using it to get around at like 3 months old. She crawled at 5.5 months. It was exhausting Grin

He gets lots of lying down time and tummy time - although not a massive fan of it. I’m going to leave it couple more weeks and see where we are then

Have you tried seeing an osteopath? I had a breech baby and just did a few sessions (proper osteopathy - not cranial osteopathy). We did it earlier as we were having feeding issues, but it might still be something proactive to try whilst you discuss with the HV.

BeSharpHelper · 15/08/2026 20:34

M did was a breech vaginal birth and rolled/ crawled early . I don’t think a breech c- section delivery affects them unduly ? I have never heard of that.

BeSharpHelper · 15/08/2026 20:34

I meant affects rolling or crawling unduly .

He was under them at birth due to breech birth. He had to wear double nappy for 6 weeks because one of his hips were slightly immature. He was fine when reviewed though

I’d have a chat with my health visitor personally, and if it’s an option for you, you could look into getting some private physio sessions.

Have you tried facilitated rolling (where you help them roll and then gradually decrease the amount of support you give them to roll?). Does he reach for his feet? If not you can get little colourful socks with bells and crinkly things on that encourage them to grab their feet, that can help them build the strength they need to then roll.

Sesame2011 · 16/08/2026 08:18

My baby didnt roll either. I thought all babies did until mine didnt. Wasnt overly concerned as everything else was fine. She started sitting at 5 months, crawling at 9 months. She also slept on her back like a corpse until 11 months. Shes now 13 months and can roll no problem in and out of bed. Could just be one of those things! Enjoy the peaceful nappy changes while they last 😂

My first kid was a sack of potato. I swear he didn’t roll until 9 months. I can’t remember but he really was lazy.

I would say though that if you have seen this previously/ he had strength he has now lost. Go straight to the GP!

I don’t know if you seen the news about the little mix twin babies who started to lose muscle mass. It’s super rare condition but get it checked!

Sorry I think you misread my post. He sat up at 3-4 months old for about 10 seconds at a time but then stopped doing it until 6 months. Now he sits up for longer but still bit wobbly. Tends to lean to one side
