Five-year-old wants own bed three days after tonsil surgery

Morning,
My 5 year old has had her tonsils out in Sunday.
Day 3. She wants to sleep in her own bed tonight- apprentely I am too noisy when I sleep and she cant lay how she wants.

She has and has very specific sleep set up so I honestly think she wants to get back to it and her routine.

I am fine with this, the pink noise and lights she has along with black out blind are driving me mad 🥹

But I cant remember for life of me what the advise was, she said first night but I have gone blank after that 🫪

Thanks ☺️

Let her sleep where she comfortable. 3 days have passed she'll be fine.

I don’t know what the advice is, but if your 5 year old is healthy enough to express an opinion, she is probably strong enough to sleep independently.

If you are worried and have an old baby monitor, that would be a good compromise.

As a children’s nurse who looks after children having had a tonsillectomy I’ve never given advice about where they should sleep. This sounds very specific to the hospital you were in. We only give out advice for pain relief, how long to have off school and eating and drinking and bleeding.

And I say this as a mum whose child has their tonsils out as well. he just slept in his own bed and I woke him up for pain medicine.

I do remember being told something about sleeping in the same room as DS but he was 2 when he had his tonsillectomy so perhaps that impacted it?

Generally the advice for all general anaesthetics, not just children, is they aren’t left alone for the first night assuming day surgery, but wasn’t told you literally needed to sleep in the same room, just you were within earshot. After 3 days yes, normal routine is good and shows she’s doing well.

I slept by myself in hospital when I had mine out. No parents allowed.

But that was the olden days 🤣

I think she'll be fine OP! And getting better sleep will do you both good

Do you have a monitor you can put in there to give you peace of mind?
I probably wouldn't sleep much and would be checking on her loads if that was my DD but sleep is healing and she'll get a better sleep in her own bed.

Orangemintcream · 22/07/2026 20:06

The usual advice for anaesthesia is just to not be left alone for 24 hours - I would never interpret it that she can’t sleep in her own bed.

Is there a reason you’ve extended that for 3 days ? Has she been particularly unwell ?

Same here. Never given advice about sleeping arrangements.
