Newborn with bump on head and very sleepy, any similar experiences?

Hi guys please help
My new born was born with a massive bump on his head. He had alot of hair at birth and only noticed how bad it was until we shaved his hair off. We are getting it seen by the doctor soon but the one midwife who saw it recently said it should go down. Has anyone else experienced this?
He is also sleeping too much. Hes having plenty of wet nappies but he can barely keep his eyes open. He is just over a week old. Any advise is appreciated.

You shaved a newborn? That has to be a wind up.
Newborns are very sleepy - expect 20-30 mins of wakefulness before they snooze off for another nap. If they don’t have any periods of wakefulness during the day I would seek urgent medical advice.

Another one not quite getting past the shaving hair part but aside from that, if you’re concerned, tell the dr and ask for him to be checked asap. No one here can possibly know and you’re safest checking if your instinct is that things aren’t right.

I imagine that the head shaving is for religious/cultural reasons

It’s very common in some sections of Islamic culture - the child’s hair is shaved on the 7th day and the weight of the hair is then donated (traditionally in gold, but more often in regular currency) to a charity. Muslims have strict charitable responsibilities and this falls under it, along with seen as cleansing the baby.

@M1ssF id reach out to your midwife if you’re concerned about wakefulness or see if you can get a same day doctors appointment - most GPs will see a baby this young immediately.

My son had a huge lump on his head when he was a newborn. Like you we didn't notice it immediately. We showed the midwife and also a GP - they said it was likely down to him being so low down in my pelvis for so many weeks. He is 4 now and still has a lumpy head, not that you'd tell.
Newborns are very sleepy but if you're concerned about your baby just ring to show him to a GP. They can put your mind at rest.

I think newborns can be very sleepy, especially if you are in a part of the country where the heatwave is still going on. DD1 was born during the heatwave in 2021 and I remember the midwife telling me to rub an ice cube on her feet to wake her up enough to feed because she wasnt feeding enough and dropping weight 😩 But having said, no dr or midwife would ever turn away checking over a baby this tiny so if you are worried please call. Does your hospital have an advice line that you can ring post partum? We had a 24/7 line we could call until we were discharged by the community midwives.

If he can 'can barely keep his eyes open' all of the time then call out of hours and seek medical advice. They'll want to see a one week old.

How very rude. I’m sure shaving a baby’s head doesn’t harm it.

If you’re worried about the alterness levels in a newborn you should seek medical advice. 111 will just send you A and E.

Of course it’s out of choice !! EVERY religion is a ‘Man made ‘ .. set of rules to control a population long before mass communication… you CAN choose not to be indoctrinated..
