8.5 month not sitting unassisted - when to be concerned?

My little girl is 8.5 months old and still cannot sit unassisted. We are trying daily with doing tripod sitting , putting toys infront for her to reach , holding by her hips etc. and have been trying for the past couple months but not seeing much progress with her trying to sit unassisted. When should I be concerned?

How is she with tummy time? Does she roll/ push up/ prop herself up on her arms/ crawl at all or try to?

It might be worth just checking in with your health visitor or GP but she might just need a bit more time :) I think anything from 6-9 months is normal for sitting, and there's a window either side of that too.

It's so hard not to compare though isn't it?... my son is nearly 1 and not pulling up yet, and I keep looking at friends with similar age babies who are already toddling around and worrying. I keep having to tell myself they are just all different and will get there!

@wrinklycactus she rolls back and forth , but isn’t attempting to crawl at all or like I mentioned wanting to sit up alone.
it is really hard as everyone I see around her age or even younger are sitting , crawling etc. so it is really worrying ☹️

Yeah, I get that, the comparison is awful and so hard not to worry.

My baby has been a little on the late side with all his gross motor milestones. He only just started crawling and hasn't pulled up yet at all at nearly 1. It's when you go to playgroups etc and you see what other babies can do you think 'why are they already doing that and mine isn't?'

I think you have to look at their development overall... like with my son I'm not worried enough to take him to be seen because he is meeting his milestones, he's just taking a bit longer but he's still progressing.

But having said that I wouldn't hesitate to take him if I was even a tiny bit worried, and I think they rather you do than don't! Maybe you should book in with the health visitor just to put your mind at rest? Or if there's an NHS baby group near you, you could take her there and just have a chat with the health visitors whilst she plays?

I think that’s quite late so I’d definitely speak to a hv. Is she quite long?

Mine didn't really sit until he could crawl with his tummy up at 11 months. He could hold himself in the High chair though and was commando crawling at 6 months.

I never used to put my youngest in any containers such as bouncer or sit me up seats and I think that helped her learn to sit alone. Plenty of floor time with lots of toys to interest them helps to encourage them into seeing what their bodies can do.
Your baby must have some core strength to roll both ways so I’m sure it won’t be long before she is sitting.

Mine didn't sit unassisted till much older than that. I just popped her on her tummy any time we went anywhere for her to develop her core till she figured it out and could pull herself into sitting. She was commando crawling at 5 months, but didn't walk till... Something like 16 months? I'd personally be worried if she couldn't sit in something like a high chair at that age, but wouldn't be worried otherwise. Health visitor is a great person to check in with though.
