Anyone’s child have or had Tics?

DS 8 years old started blinking hard with both eyes around 2 months ago. Then over the last week he has started shrugging his left shoulder upto his chin like he’s rubbing his chin against his shoulder.
He also had a sniffing tic a few months ago that disappeared as soon as it came.
Ive spoke to the doctor who isn’t worried and said that it’s super common in school age kids and that he will very likely grow out of it.
Has anyone else had or have a child with a tic and they disappeared in time?

My eldest has had loads of different tics over the years. Sniffing. Stretching his mouth to one side of his face. Blinking rapidly. Jerking his head as if to shake something away. He has ASD and ADHD and tics can feature fairly frequently with both of these. It took a lot of practice not to tell him to effing well stop it! He grew out of them in his early teens. He just cracks his knuckles now, but not sure if that’s a tic. Drives me up the walls😆

So reassuring to hear so may stories of similar children who do weird and wonderful tics and have grown out of them!

Is your son on antihistamines? I read recently that they can cause tics. I’m trialling taking my son off them and using HayMax balm instead. It’s only been a week and no change in tics so far but I read it can take longer to see improvement.

My son developed tics aged 8. I read somewhere that magnesium supplements can help so we gave him 2 bottles of a high strength supplement over a few months. By the time we got to the end of them he had almost entirely stopped. He very occasionally tics now, usually when tired or under pressure, but they’re very minor. He’s about to turn 9.
I’ve taught lots of children with tics and they usually disappear eventually.

My DS had them at similar ages to PPs and grew out of them at puberty. He is dyspraxic, but nothing else, and is doing very well as an adult. When he worried about them, we said to him, if they’re really bothering you, we can go to the GP, because they can offer some help, but that he’d likely grow out of them at puberty, which he did. And then just gave him a cuddle to make him feel better.

Hello. My child has had tics on and off since age 6. Started with mouth widening one day out of the blue. Other tics we’ve had have included hopping on one leg, nose scrunching, eyebrow raising and recently more which can change day to day from looking over shoulder, moving neck to one side, snapping head back, hand shaking, t shirt pulling, extending arms. Vocal tics have included clearing throat, coughing. It is really hard not to spend every second worried sick. Absolutely dreading the start of school. Am unsure if child is aware we were always told to ignore. A few years ago, at onset, we went to the GP who just dismissed it. Did refer to camhs but was rejected. Pursued it again a year later and they saw us but don’t have a service to help. So not really sure what to do. The stories I’ve read here fill me with hope that even though it’s been a few years maybe it will improve. I hope that things have calmed down for you and I will you lots of luck on your journey. May things calm down for our children. Just wanted to let you know you are not alone.

DS had a throat-clearing one for several months age 6. It disappeared, then reappeared the following year after a bad cold. GP said just to make a note of when any tics appeared/disappeared, but wasn't concerned.

Look up PANS / PANDAS. Tics can be brought on by strep. If the throat swab comes back positive for strep you can have antibiotics from your GP to sort it.

@Yabbadabbadooooooo i mentioned this at the outset four years ago to my GP but they didn’t really know what I was on about it help. Just said many children experience tics and not to mention them. I will try to go back or book privately with a neurologist with experience of them. Sadly I feel privately is the only way you can be treated these days.
