Looking for possible answers. Ds is 12 and has detected blood and pus in urine. Doc is saying no uti. And it is viral infection. He is also complaining about pain in left side so I think where kidney is

I’m sorry, hate to even suggest and VERY unlikely that young but perhaps needs camera/test for bladder cancer?

JoyeuxNarwhal · 15/01/2026 16:04

Why is the doc so sure it's not a UTI? Is that just based on a dip test or have they sent it off for culture?

JoyeuxNarwhal · 15/01/2026 16:05

Any other symptoms btw? Temp/rigors?

Lochalvie · 15/01/2026 16:10

Yes it has been sent off and no sign of uti apparently. Just blood and pus.

he has had a slightly elevated temperature. Sore tummy and lymph nodes in groin. He is actually mostly on the mend now. Tummy a little bit sore still. but we just got these results back so I am just thinking about it all.

Hmmmm…. There must be an infection somewhere if there is definitely pus ?

Lochalvie · 15/01/2026 16:13

Yes that’s what I am confused about . Pus but no uti. Would a viral infection cause pus?

Has he had a sore throat OP?

I'm not sure about the pus, but DC1 had this after a bout of strep throat:

He had a high fever, sore throat then a week later blood (visible amounts) and protein in his urine. Went away quickly with antibiotics and he's had no lasting issues. It's fairly rare though.

Glomerulonephritis

Read about glomerulonephritis, which is damage to the tiny filters inside your kidneys (the glomeruli).

My DD had uti symptoms and positive for blood and pus but no bacteria grown. Had antibiotics anyway and cleared up, next sample was clear.

im awaiting pediatrics follow up but been waiting months and no app yet!

Thanks for this. Never heard of it so one to keep an eye out for. Don’t think he had sore throat. A bit of a cough though

I wonder why they need to do follow up.
