Hi sorry this is abit long

It started at the beginning of September my son had just a simple cold, after about 2 weeks he was chesty I took him to doctors who sent him to hospital and they said it’s viral but prescribed antibiotics just incase as oxygen was slightly low but advised only pick up the antibiotics if he spikes a temp.

So he had no temp but no improvement after a week so returned to gp who said he had a chest infection and he completed a weeks course of antibiotics. A week later he still hadn’t improved back to gp who sent us to hospital for further tests.

The hospital was reluctant to do a xray but done one for my peace of mind. The first doctor said she could see fluffiness the second doctor said his heart looks enlarged and the third doctor said it’s a bad picture and he wouldn’t have noticed. Radiology said to repeat in 6 weeks.

5 weeks later he still hadn’t improved much so was awaiting second xray until he went really downhill ended up in hospital with inhalers and steroids he still couldn’t keep his oxygen up and need oxygen. The following week he had his repeat xray which they said had slight improvement from last xray.

Since then his chest sounds completely fine no more working harder to breathe but his energy is gone he is pale he don’t wanna play just wants to sit on the sofa cries when we have to go out. He’s usually happy and active and now if he plays he gets completely knackered and not his normal self at all. He is irritable and 2 doctors have mentioned he has puffy eyes.

I returned to gp last week with him who wasn’t sure what is going on and she mentioned his eyes and said she wants bloods done to check kidneys inflammation and infection markers and full blood count and a stool test as he’s going 4/6 times a day. He done his stool test that’s come back ok but over weekend I’ve noticed it looks like his food looks like it’s just going straight through him and coming back out and it’s green. Trying not to worry as test come back fine.

He had his blood test Friday and then it’s been the weekend so no results yet, what could be causing this? Just a long recovery? I haven’t had the same happy boy since August and I don’t know how to help him

How old is he?

Kirbert2 · 15/12/2025 10:56

I'm not sure what's causing it but I'm very glad that they've taken full bloods. Hopefully that will provide some answers as clearly something is going on.

Hopefully those bloods will get back soon!

You need to await blood results.

My little one was similar, his turned out to be low iron as he wasn't absorbing nutrients properly due to the diarrhoea. He was started on an iron supplement and the improvement in his health has been amazing. Hopefully it will be something like this for your little one
