My 7 year old son is a very naturally bright and loving boy, however, his listening is getting very challenging at home and in school. His hearing has been tested as he failed the test in Reception… he had it tested in hospital and there is nothing wrong with his hearing. He isn’t hyper. He will happily watch a film or draw and play with Lego etc and os a very good reader. He has always had an anxious/reserved demeanour until he is comfortable. But the issues are:
He has no urgency, no awareness of time, if I ask him to do something I usually have to ask about 20/30/100 times, when we’re in a rush or we need to leave there house he gets distracted, it’s affecting his school work as he never finishes his work on time, he’s always last - but for example with spelling tests he typically gets them all right every week with very little effort.. so it’s not like he can’t do the work. He likes routine and familiarity, and sometimes if he doesn’t get his own way or we can’t do something he was expecting he sort of stands still and starts shaking with anger. I try the counting to three approach, I get down tk his level and make sure I have his full attention whilst asking him to do something etc… I try the fun approach and making it into a competition etc…. I just don’t know what to do. Nothing seems to work. It’s mainly every time we have to leave the house or have to get ready or have a deadline. 9/10 it’s hard work.
Does this sound like normal 7 year old boy behaviour or does it sound like adhd?
Thanks xx
