2.5 year old not eating and sleeping a lot after illness

My son gets frequent viral induced wheezes and was in hospital Thursday night because of it. He had a cold a week ago Saturday and was ill all last week. He's now on antibiotics. He's refusing to eat and not drinking much (but has enough wet nappies). He's taken himself to sleep about an hour and a half ago but he NEVER naps anymore. He's 2.5 years old. Something just doesn't feel right but I am sure the drs wouldn't do anything. He has enough wet nappies and is breathing fine. Am I being paranoid? He has health issues so I might be being over protective

Does something feel different to you this time? How long since he has eaten?

Jennielouises · 12/08/2025 10:28

Yeah definitely different. He doesn't nap and he napped for 2 hours! Then slept through from 8 till 7 and only woke up as we got him up. He's not lethargic though. He drinking enough so I don't think the drs will do anything but he's just saying no to all food. He will nibble so is getting some but he doesn't even want a chocolate biscuit!

Ia he fully over the illness? We do forget how long we should take to recover from things. And he is on antibiotics which can make you feel crap. So he isn’t right so what you are really asking is “is he more not right than he should be at this stage “ which is hard to judge

Jennielouises · 12/08/2025 10:45

Yeah I guess that is what I’m asking. His breathing all seems better so he seems well besides the not eating and being tired. I just wish he was old enough to tell me sometimes

Jennielouises · 12/08/2025 10:52

What’s the ab and has he had it before?

Jennielouises · 12/08/2025 10:55

It’s coamoxiclav. Yeah he’s had it before. It’s never made him sleepy. He’s been on it a week and normally he’d be back to eating by now

He must have been pretty poorly to require a 2 week course of ABs!
He is probably still feeling under the weather, and slept badly when he was really ill. As others have said, ABs can make you feel pretty rough as well.
If he's not eating, then he will be low on energy too. Can you get some calories into him via fluids - fruit juice, ice lollies etc? Keep offering food - not just at meal times.

Jennielouises · 12/08/2025 11:28

We’re giving him fruit juice. He can’t have ice lollies as he requires thickened fluids. He didn’t seem as ill as I’ve seen him before. I think they’ve just given a long dose due to his history. He has dysphagia and airway malacia and had pneumonia and viral induced wheezes before. It makes me wonder if he still needs to be on them tbh

They want to bash this thing on the head

another week - might be best checking with the doctor what you should be expecting as child quite young for no food for that long

Thanks
