My son has struggled to pass stools and suffered with constipation since he was born. We finally got referred to a consultant who attempted a hirsphrungs biopsy but said his anal canal was too narrow to investigate under anaesthetic properly so they ordered imaging under sedation
We just got the subsequent MRI results showing anterior meningocele and sacral anomalies which means now we have to wait for nuro surgeons appointment.
They think it's caused by Currarino syndrome a very rare condition (less than 1 in 100,000) and they say it's hereditary. I also had to have an anoplasty and other rectum surgeries when I was a child but we didn't know the reason and he cannot have the same as his narrow part is too close to the sphincter and too risky
So please munsnet have you got any experience you can share?
Has anyone known anyone that's had this corrected?what was recovery like?
Until this post had anyone even heard of Currarino?
All I can find online is tiny section in the NHS spinabifida page
Thanks so much
