Is this the norm nowadays to 'uncast' 1 yo at home

So 1 yo fractured leg at nursery.

Full leg cast on for 3 weeks and we have been told to take if off ourselves. Called a soft cast but feels rock hard.

On top of that they're not even going to look at it just a telephone apmt a couple of weeks after we take the cast off!

Any experiences and/or advice. Should we push for something else or is this normal?

Doesn't help that the fracture clinic are so difficult to get through to on the phone!

Yep perfectly normal, softens when wet very easily

I don't know about 1 year olds but I had to do the same with a cast. I was really surprised. You would think they'd be a bit more cautious with a baby as they can't tell you how it feels.
I guess all you can do is make sure you get the little one seen if you take it off and have any concerns.

I was surprised by that too, was a bit older 5? Stuck them in the bath and just gently unwound it.

Thanks all. Good to know removing it is straightforward but if I can ever get through to the fracture clinic I will ask that they at least check the leg afterwards rather than a phone call!

Just can't get throught to them. It's impossible!

Had the same with my next door neighbour - she had no bath, so came to mine.

So i got through to them and they gave us the choice of coming in to take the cast off or having a ftf apmt a couple of weeks after. They said it was pointless checking the leg after as they wanted to give it a week or 2.

We could only go in once so we have chose to change the telephone apmt to a face to face one a couple of weeks after taking the cast off.

I wonder if it is worth getting the GP to have a look at the leg once we take the cast off.
