Concern About My Child’s Health – Looking for Advice

Hello, Mumsnet community,

I’m looking for some advice regarding my child’s health and feeling a bit worried. My 4-year-old has been experiencing a persistent cough and mild fever for the past few days. Specifically, I’ve noticed:

  • They’ve been coughing quite a bit, especially at night.
  • Their appetite seems to have decreased, and they seem more tired than usual.
  • They’ve mentioned feeling a little “cold” despite being wrapped up warmly.

I’ve tried giving them plenty of fluids and paracetamol to help with the fever, but it doesn’t seem to improve. I’ve also been monitoring their temperature and keeping them rested.

There’s no history of asthma or respiratory issues in our family, but I’m worried this could be something more.

Has anyone experienced something similar? I’m wondering whether I should be more concerned and take them to see a doctor again or if this is just a common childhood illness that will pass. Any advice or reassurance would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much in advance for your help!

How old is your child? Are they still drinking fluids?

It's early spring, every one of my nephew's & nieces has a cold at the moment. They all have a slight fever that comes and goes, a bit snotty or with a cough.

Keep an eye on your child, a temperature above 38 will make them alternately cold, and hot.

Ibuprofen, plenty of fluids and perhaps a child's daily multivitamin pill. They should improve within a week.

If it's only been a few days what makes you think it's anything more than a standard viral infection? There are so many coughs and colds going around at the moment. My foster daughter had one from Saturday to yesterday, it's only this morning I can see an improvement in her. If the temp has gone on longer than 5 days I'd be concerned or they stop drinking fluids, but being off food while unwell is extremely common for children and won't harm them.

Are there any other symptoms that worry you?
