Is this an abscess on my sons gum?

Hi :)

My 9 year old son told me his gum was hurting today, looking at it, it looks very much like an abscess to me :(

It only hurts when touching it and he has no toothache. Does It look like an abscess?

He has a checkup on Tuesday anyway, do you think it could wait til then if he’s not in pain?

It looks like one, I would be trying to get him seen before Tuesday as they can turn nasty quite quickly.

Yes it’s an abscess. Ideally he needs to be seen

My DD had a lump like that above a wobbly tooth. The first dentist we saw said it was an abscess and the tooth needed removing but it was a private dentist and the amount they wanted was astronomical so I took her to our NHS dentist the next day who said the tooth did need to come out but that it was actually something called an eruption cyst.
Is it above an adult or a baby tooth? (Sorry, I'm not sure when molars fall out!)

Peripheral ossifying fibroma is my bet. I’ve just had one removed. It was painless, and almost in the same place as your son’s. Common in children and teens the consultant said, he just needs it removing. Dentist can refer you.

Dd1 had an eruption cyst over a newly coming through adult tooth and although a similar size her cyst was more purple ish in colour, like the colour of a bruise that looks more like a normal abcess to me op

Like that. A gum coloured bulge above the tooth!

Thanks all, it’s gone down a little bit and he’s still in pain at all, so think we’ll just see Tuesday .
