3 year old nails falling off and new ones not growing fully

Hi mommies and paediatricians
my son got HFMD from nursery but his symptoms only lasted a few days, several weeks after I noticed his nails are splitting and googled it, realised that its the delayed symptom of HFMD, and was relieved to read that most people said no treatment is required and nails will grow back again. However, in my son’s case, his index finger nail fell off last week, but the new one has only grown almost 2/3 of the nail bed, i covered it in plaster for a few days to protect the nail bed, but had to leave it open eventually as he was peeling the plaster off. My worry is that the nail is not fully grown and i can see that the edge of the nail is going white(clippable area). Does anyone have any experience with this? Will they grow back fully, do i need to do anything to help them grow?

thanks all

It takes a while for nails to grow, sounds normal to me.

What is HFMD?

greengreyblue · 05/02/2025 20:26

Whatever it is, if the nail has fallen off due to illness and they will grown back, then you just have to wait. I’ve lost nails due to injury and they take a while but then are normal within months .

My son’s toenails took forever to grow back. But all fine now x

@greengreyblue its Hand Foot and Mouth Disease
its when you get rashes in these areas and can be very itchy. Apparently its very common in kids but i’d never heard of it myself.

thank you all for your reassuring messages, I really hope they grow back fully, ive always been insecure about my own nails being short compared to everyone in my family. Don’t want the same to happen to my son.
