DD lump on side of foot after sprain

DD (9) went over on the side of her foot a few days so. Very painful when she did it but it seems to be getting better quickly. We iced and elevated it and gave nurofen. Swelling went down over a couple of days and it now just looks bruised. She can walk on it although it’s obviously tender and we’ve made sure she isn’t on her feet too much/ stays in at playtime at school.

However, although the swelling has gone, she has a lump on the outer side of the foot. I’m now worried that she might have a fracture and that I’ve been a terrible parent and should’ve taken her to urgent care when she first did it.

Could it be broken? And if so, could there be further damage by not getting it seen straight away?? It happened 4 days ago.

Take her to a minor injuries unit with X-ray. She may have a fracture. Waiting even later isn’t going to help.

Oh god, I feel awful.

Don’t feel bad. It will give you peace of mind one way or the other.

Soooodenim · 10/01/2025 22:52

Thank you. Thought I was doing the right thing, especially as it seemed to be getting better.

It’s ok. You couldn’t have known, the fact there is a lump is a symptom of more than a sprain. Just get it checked for sure now it’s not getting better.

4 days isn’t long too. Please don’t feel awful.

Soooodenim · 10/01/2025 23:02

Thanks for being kind. I fully expected to get “why on earth didn’t you get immediate medical attention” type responses!

Please don’t feel bad, my friends son walked about with a fracture in his foot for a week before his mum took him to the hospital, his foot was really swollen and she thought that was all that was wrong with it.

it’s an easy mistake to make .

hopefully to help - I sprained my ankle/ foot a lot as a kid / teenager and have a lump on the side of my foot ever since - no breaks! X

You took all the right steps for a twisted ankle and are observant enough to note something isn’t quite right, you’ve done really well. Knowing when to get something checked by a professional is nothing to be ashamed of vs panicking at the drop of a hat. It’s ok. Xx

I’m surprised people are saying 4 days isn’t long and not to worry as you couldn’t have know . Of course you couldn’t have known and that’s why you should have taken it to be looked at, how could you possibly know whether it was a sprain or a break or a tear etc without an x-ray and a proper examination? Hopefully it isn’t anything that needs further treatment but get her seen by a medical professional asap just in case as you won’t know until it’s been properly checked.

Soooodenim · 10/01/2025 23:27

@MolkosTeenageAngst all the advice I read recommended self treatment in the first instance?

Don't feel bad op, Other than RICE they wouldn't actually DO anything for a fracture anyway, would they? No treatment as such other than what you'd do at home, for a strain anyway, or is that not right?

My whole leg has been swollen, bruised black and yellow for a week. Sore!

Soooodenim · 11/01/2025 00:01

Thanks @Oblomov25

What have you done?!

Relieved to say we got an X-ray and there’s no break. Thanks for all who gave advice 😊
