Is there anything that can be done for recurrent ear infections?

Both my children are under the ENT for recurrent ear infections but to be honest we haven’t had an awful lot by way of solutions. Going to the GP is pointless.

We give them Calpol and Neurofen to manage discomfort and pain but is there anything else that might help. The fluid in the ear must be so uncomfortable.

Usually if the infections are frequent enough then grommets are inserted.

The consultant advised against grommets because firstly their age and then for our older one he did appear to be growing out of them, but they are back with a vengeance now so I don’t know if that will make any sort of difference. The consultant also said that it may be too wet for grommets.
