Gripe Water for under 1 month old

I had a GP appointment for my 13 day old newborn, who has been struggling with colic. The GP suggested giving him gripe water, but I noticed the box says it's not recommended for babies under 1 month old. Has anyone used gripe water for a baby younger than 1 month? I'm unsure if I should follow the GP's advice or not. Thanks in advance for your insights!

Have you considered a tongue tie? I think gripe water would be masking symptoms of something else tbh and I would be unlikely to use it, maybe contact your health visitor?

Gripe water is a placebo, so the GP probably just wanted to make you feel like you were doing something. I would keep looking for solution to the discomfort.

Unfortunately it sounds like GP was fobbing you off. There’s zero evidence gripe water does anything. It used to contain alcohol and then baby would snooze quietly in a drunken stuper. And this was recent, early 1990s it was removed, so it can continue to trade the old name and reputation because our parents’ generation used it and found it worked wonders!

Colic just means unexplained crying, so the way to alleviate it is figure out what it is actually causing the discomfort, not give a pointless non treatment. Have you looked at the symptoms of silent reflux to see if that would fit? You might also find the health visitor better than the GP.

Colic is an umbrella term for crying. Gripe water doesn't do anything.

Any signs of reflux?

Placebo. I would be wondering about cmpa.

This is a very informative article about colic.

We tried gripe water twice. Projectile vomited both times then we threw it away.
For most babies time makes the difference. As others have said it's been suggested as something to suggest.
My daughter had issues from week 1 but was it 4 months long months later when the dots joined up to cmpa, severe silent reflux and moderate reflux.
Have you spoken to the midwives? I think I'd get their pov over a GP.
