No urge to use the toilet?

DS is 12 and has lately mentioned he doesn’t feel the need to poo anymore and hasn’t since the past month. It’s not constipation, and his diet is good with lots of fiber, so I’m not sure why he is barely getting the urge to use the bathroom. I’m starting to get worried this can impact his health. He goes once every 4 or 5 days or so

Has he started vaping?

Asking purely because I noticed this side-effect when I started vaping.

Definitely not, he’s only 12. He has mentioned getting tingly hands and feet though

Tingly hands and feet? Maybe he's anaemic.

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend with the vaping suggestion. Sadly I see plenty of youngsters vaping and I'd bet their parents don't know.

Get him to the doctor, that doesn't sound right with the tingly hands and feet.

Side note - lots of 12 year olds do vape, or experiment with vaping, I'm not suggesting that he is/does or that it's related, but it's naive to think at his age he won't be exposed to these things that some of his peers will be doing. It's absolutely rife at my son's school and it's mostly the 11-13yr olds, the older ones are not so interested, novelty worm off maybe.

He does take iron tablets, and has a lot of vegetables so I don’t think it’s that, but I was thinking maybe nerve issues

don’t worry you didn’t offend

With the tingly hands and feet as well he really needs to see the GP asap, could be something neurological

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 02/12/2024 21:21

Does he drink enough water?

ShimmeringLake · 02/12/2024 22:35

Thanks for the advice, I have booked a GP appointment for Friday so hopefully that will help get some answers. Yeah I’ve been making sure he’s drinking lots of water and getting enough vitamins. He’s vegetarian so also making sue he takes b12. He hasn’t been the toilet in two days which I’m rather worried about

What makes you think he’s not constipated?

He may be, I always just thought with constipation you get the urge to poo but just struggle to, whereas he isn’t getting any sensation and when I basically tell him to try, he can poo without any pain besides the discomfort of not having been in a long tine

Some people don't go that often. I only poo every four to five days. It's been longer very occasionally.

That’s true, I can be the same at times, only doing a poo once every 2-3 days sometimes. However this isn’t the normal for DS. It could be that it is nothing but I’m also just cautious and worried

Sometimes people can’t feel it, or will have accidents where looser poo goes past the blockage. Really on average he should be going every day. I’d see GP.
