Baby Sudden high temp — no symptoms

Hi all, very strange.

Went to park with little one today no symptoms at all — to come home and be laid down for a nap and my 9 month old began running a 40 fever while napping and was only in a onesie.

Stripped down and she has only been in nappies since. Have given and Calpol and Nurofen alternate since and won’t move away from 39 fever ??? UTI or?

just can’t believe how sudden and how high it is.

Many, many thanks. From a worried mama 🐻

Sorry, should add that it’s very unusual and
unlike her for her temperature to not come down after Calpol or Nurofen?

How is she in herself. Go off the child not the thermometer is what the doctor told me as both my kids spike really high temps

Cmuxx · 07/10/2024 23:19

Yes, quite irritable and uncomfortable tonight. I know you can treat a fever but so hard with no other symptoms?

Any time mine had super high temps it was an ear infection. They don't necessarily show any other symptoms when that's the case.

Dont strip her down to a nappy
She still needs clothes on

Gunpowder · 08/10/2024 02:49

I would call 111 as she’s under a year old, especially as the fever isn’t coming down after calpol or nurofen. Whenever mine have had a temp over 40 (at that age) it’s been bacterial (a UTI, strep throat or an ear infection). I think best to get her seen. I hope she feels better soon.

Hi all, in A&E at the moment. LO started vomiting while asleep in the night as still EBF and hasn’t kept anything down since 11pm. Not too happy as all A&E Dr did was give her antisickness and are still sending us home with high fever still of 38 and no explanation for the vomiting. Just told to carry on with Calpol… not right to me.

Did they look in her ears or throat? If you are still worried I would trust your instincts. You could call your GP as soon as they open and ask them to see her this morning?

Cmuxx · 08/10/2024 15:39

Thank you all for popping on and keeping us in your thoughts. It has been a tough 24 hours. We’re onto a different hospital today as my LO is still vomiting and unable to even keep down Calpol & Nurofen. Fever back up to 39.4. Felt it was medically negligent of the A&E to guess it was viral and put down as respiratory virus. No other symptoms at all still. No coughs, runny nose, colds. Just terrified of dehydration now at this point. Trusting instincts.

May push them to test for UTI as @Gunpowder mentioned.

I’m so sorry she’s still poorly. I would absolutely ask them if they’d be willing to test for a UTI. I hope she’s a bit better this morning.

Thank you all ❤️

Update just in case same symptoms happen to another unfortunate household in our situation — we were ultimately admitted into the hospital, she had a bacterial infection of tonsillitis. First hospital insisted it was UTI and prescribed the incorrect antibiotics.
She quickly deteriorated and her infection levels were very high. This was after pushing and pushing for bloods to be done. Went straight on antibiotics as her vomiting from the throat was unable to keep it down. Still here and will be coming back for 4 days so the rest can be administered to her. We are now on the mend and things are looking up now. ❤️‍🩹

I’m so sorry she became so poorly. Well done on advocating for her so brilliantly. I’m so pleased to hear she’s on the mend and hope you have managed to have a bit of rest yourself since the abx kicked in!

Oh god what a nightmare you've had op, so glad she's in the mend.

^

This makes me so mad. Why didn't they realize she needed bloods done???
