Hi,

looking for some advice my son was born super hairy and it’s never gone, he’s 5 now and he has super hairy legs, arms and back all over and I’ve been to see 2 different drs and both said he’s fine it’s just your Italian genes (fair enough) 😂 he has never noticed or said anything about it and that’s perfect he’s an adorable little boy, but yesterday I noticed he had some pubic hairs like 3/4 and I started to panic as I had previously ready about preterm puberty starting early is a condition, I’m just not sure should I go back to the dr and sound like an obsessed mum or just say oh it’s nothing just the Italian genes (yes both me and papa were hairy before we did laser so I get it but I don’t remember what i was like at 5 yrs old

Any signs of puberty before 8 and you should go to the GP.

This is called precocious puberty and ought to be checked out. Often there's nothing more to it than 'it is what it is' and you'll get support managing it. But it is worth investigation to rule out an underlying cause that may need heavier input/medical management. I wouldn't at all panic, OP. But do get your little guy checked out, just for support if anything.

It is worth having him seen by a doctor. If there are no signs of the rest of puberty (enlarging testicles and growth spurt) it may be only be "isolated adrenarche" rather than the whole thing.

Is it actual pubic hair or just body hair? My 6 year old boy has little hairs around his genitals but they are the same as the rest of his body hair. Not coarse etc.

My son had similar but at a younger age. They did bone age X-ray which showed nothing and some other tests. Nothing showed up. They put it down to just hair growth (can't remember the medical terminology sorry). Puberty was normal age. No issues. So doesn't necessarily mean a problem

Hopefully just premature adrenarche rather than actual precocious puberty, but needs checking out.

Thank you I’ve been so worried, also feel bad that I’m going to have to expose him to drs and stuff I don’t know it’s all new to me but I’m just hoping it’s nothing and just normal hair growth.

I was going to say this, but I'm pretty sure adrenarche can start around the age of 5 and that wouldn't even be early. I wouldn't panic OP as that's the most likely explanation, but definitely take him to the GP to have it checked just in case.

Thank you tbh he always had fine hairs there and I was thinking maybe they have just grown a little thicker, you wouldn’t easily notice, I have him booked in to see a dr, really hoping it’s nothing but our hairy Italian genes 😊
