Hand foot and mouth / going back to nursery

Hi All

My 18m DS is on day 7 of a really nasty case of HFM, head to toe rash and mouth full of ulcers that required two trips to a&e, one last Saturday advised by 111 due to dehydration and another on Wednesday advised by the GP due to non blanching rash. Blood tests etc were normal Wednesday so we were discharged with just a nasty case of HFM.

DS caught it from nursery, when I picked him up last Thursday they said they had several children with it, and unfortunately with a no exclusion policy of course it spread like wildfire.

Today and yesterday he is pretty much back to normal, eating, drinking and playing well. I do now have it too unfortunately.

I would ideally send him back to nursery on Monday, this will be 10 days after he showed first symptoms and as said he is basically back to normal. I’m just worried though about him getting it again quickly given how poorly he was, and that nursery allow kids in who have it freely.

Appreciate this wouldn’t be medical advice but wonder if anyone has a view to whether he is likely immune from the current outbreak, on the basis he’s already had it? I know it can be contagious for a while, but really hoping he wouldn’t be able to catch it again so quickly!?

I doubt he'd catch that batch of it again so quickly

Does he still have open sores?

I feel your pain op, we just had it here too

😐

DD is 7!!!

Ahhh I’m sorry @coxesorangepippin you’ve been suffering too, it’s absolutely awful?! Seems to be everywhere at the moment too?! How is your DD now?

no open sores now really, they were mainly on his hands and they do seem to have almost started scabbing, so I hope by Monday they would definitely not be open!

Oh bless him sounds like he (and you) have had a horrible time of it!
My DD had it last year when it was going around nursery and ended up having a couple of days off. She went back when there were still kids with it and she didn't catch it again. It's also been doing the rounds again at nursery for the last 3 weeks and so far she's not picked it up again. x

My son had hand foot and mouth three times in four months. Would never have thought it possible! It was hell. That said, his older brother has had it once and didn’t catch it any of those three times. It’s impossible to tell what they are and aren’t immune to.
