11YO DD chicken pox, stomach pains and vomiting.

I’m waiting on a call back from NHS111 but thought I’d ask if it’s typical for children to sometimes experience stomach pain and vomiting with CP?

DD is 11, she woke up this morning complaining of stomach pains, gave her paracetamol & a hot water bottle, ordered her to rest up and drink plenty.

Started to feel better, ate a small amount of breakfast and then started to feel unwell again. This time she was sick. She’s been sick a few times since but has nothing left to bring up now 😢

I put my hand on her back to feel how warm she was and felt 2 spots, looked under her top and sure enough, there were about 7/8 fluid filled blisters on her abdomen and more on her back. Her little sister started with CP almost 2 weeks ago so I’m fairly certain it’s that.

I just wasn’t sure whether the vomiting and stomach pain (which she’s pretty much had all day) was normal with CP. My eldest had a vomiting bug after she’d recovered from CP but I’d put that down to a separate illness at the time.
Poor mite is looking and feeling very unwell.

Have you looked at www.nhs.uk/conditions/chickenpox/ ?

No vomiting mentioned. Maybe the poor mite has both bugs at same time...

@outdamnedspots yes, however our local hospital’s leaflet for chicken pox does say that stomach ache and vomiting can be symptoms which I’d never heard of but just wondered if anyone else had experienced similar.

Of course I’m really hoping she doesn’t have both at the same time 🫣

I had CP for the second time at 12 and was sick and had diarrhoea for the first day and then the spots started to come out. I ended up having 2 weeks off school as I felt pretty rough.

My brother used to be sick as a child before every incidence of infectious illness. From what I remember it was something to do with glands in the stomach(?) My own kids used to get stomach aches when they were ill too - weren't generally sick with it though.

I’ve never heard of vomiting with chicken pox, but it’s apparently worse the older you are, so maybe that?

But if you’re concerned, don’t hesitate to call 111. Two weeks is textbook incubation period for CP.

Ah similar age to DD then! She’s looking incredibly rough. Poor thing.

Thank you all, still waiting for NHS 111 to call back. The pain has died down a little, it’s gone from 9/10 to 6/10 to 5/10. She’s a pretty tough cookie so when she says she’s in pain and feels ill she really must be!

5 YO was iffy for a few days but back to her usual self after that - no sickness or stomach cramps. Just the 3YO to go now!
