Hi, my 6 year old son started feeling unwell on Monday with a headache after school since then his then got a bad cough and has had a temperature since Tuesday. It goes down with calpol and it stayed down a few times without calpol but then will go back up again.
I took him to a pharmacy as he said his ears hurt and his prone to ear infections pharmacist said it was ear infection gave amoxicillin on Wednesday evening which he started that evening. Now it’s Saturday and his no better. Still coughing and still got a temperature. Should the antibiotics be working by now? Thank you in advance.

My daughter had 9 days of continuous temperatures and cough. Initially told it was viral but second GP visit sent us to hospital where she was diagnosed with mycoplasma chest infection. I'd never heard of it but doctors said it's rife in kids everywhere at the moment. She needed co-amoxiclav and azithromycin for a week. Worth asking about.

My kids have all had the same, and half of my 6 year old's class too. We had a possible diagnosis of slapped cheek but it's been a rough 2 weeks

@34and3 no I’ve never heard of that either… his got up this morning and his temp is 37.5 and is still coughing bad. I thought he was on the mend yesterday as his temp was down in the morning but then by 11am it was back up to 38.4. Was your daughter’s temp up and down or was it always up?

@PNDshame hope your little ones are feeling better, he has no rash or any other symptoms just a temp and cough. No runny nose or anything. Just wonder how long it will last.

Time to visit GP first thing tomorrow ... always best to get a proper diagnosis in these circumstances. 🤞

@max29 im debating weather to ring 111 or wait till morning for GP. I thought if there was anything bacterial the amoxicillin would have got rid of it.

Good idea .. why spend the day worrying... ❤️

Hay234 · 21/07/2024 08:51

@max29 don’t know what to do now, my partner says wait till tomorrow as his actually just eaten all of his breakfast this morning which he hasn’t done all week so he said wait till morning unless his temp spikes again or he goes down hill again, cause that could be a sign his getting better. X

My daughters dropped with nurofen / Calpol but they would spike to late 39 again. Was off her food etc. started with a headache, then temp, then the cough came. Hospital did chest X-ray and found an obvious infection, also did throat swabs that confirmed the mycoplasma.

Hay234 · 21/07/2024 10:27

@34and3 he hasn’t had any calpol or nurofen since 7pm last night and his temp has sat at 37.2 since 8am this morning. His eaten all his breakfast and seems to have perked up this morning. So I will keep an eye on him and if temp goes back up again today il get him seen. Hoping maybe we’ve turned a corner this morning 🤞
