Headaches after 6 days of head injury

Ds had hurt his head when he fell backwards last Friday. Took him to A &E to get it checked out. They were not concerned and were sent home. Only checked by the minor injury unit nurse. Today he has developed a headache. I gave him Calpol. He is not vomiting or feeling sick. He wants to go to bed, mother in law wants me to take him to the hospital emergency just in case something sinister about it. Please advice.

I don't want to drag him to the A and E. I followed the NHS leaflet, which states if the child is ok during the 48 hours, don't worry. Visit GP if recurrent headaches don't go away after 2 months of injury

My only worry is he went to swimming within 48 hours of the head injury, nurse said he was fine to go. His swimming is at the first stage and he had the third lesson, he was assisted throughout the whole session.

Id ring 111 for advice

cantwait4orsummer · 04/07/2024 20:43

He is in deep sleep, NHS 111 won't do an assessment until he is awake. He had only gone to bed 20 minutes ago, it was hard to wake him up. He does respond when I try to wake up and move my hands etc, I understand he must be tired

Take him to A&E as soon as you possibly can.

They should have checked him properly when you first went.

:-(

I’d take him to the GP in the morning myself if his headache is still present.

Headache is common after a head injury: concussion. Does he have any other symptoms like confusion, light sensitivity?

Quaversss · 04/07/2024 22:52

This also happened to my DD but it was a few weeks later - they said the same that as it was past the 2-3 days crucial period they weren't worried. The headaches stopped and she's been ok since.... BUT I would always say if you are worried about something get it checked if not for anything other than piece of mind.

He does not have any other symptoms. I did wake him up to use the toilet. He said the headache is better. I will keep him home tomorrow and if the headache is still present then I will defo get checked out.
