Fractured skull - recovery time

Recognising that the answer to this is likely to be, “how long is a piece of string”, but would be good to have others experiences.

Teen DC fractured base of skull on both sides in an accident, 3 weeks ago. Slight brain bleed, 7th and 8th facial nerve trauma which is recovering. No other injuries and cognitively and physically now feeling good, and back at school for half days, though does get tired quite quickly.

We were told that an MRI may be needed, but haven’t had a date. Is there an expectation that the skull fractures will heal in a certain time frame, or will scans usually be taken to confirm?

Thanks for any thoughts. The teen is keen to get back to sports asap, and are expecting to be allowed to do this in 6-8 weeks as if it was a fractured limb. Trying to manage expectations whilst keeping them positive about their recovery!
