Scarlet fever - A&E?

My DS has a lot of symptoms of scarlet fever. Finished antibiotics for tonsillitis last week, yesterday got a temp, croaky voice, can’t really swallow but throat spray helping, tonight he has a rash that feels like sandpaper all over his body. Have done the glass test which was fine. He’s fast asleep now, calpol has brought his temp down and he managed a bite to eat before bed. I don’t really want to wake him and take him to A&E at this time, would rather phone 111 in the morning and get an appointment at out of hours. Am I being unreasonable to wait till then? He has been fine in himself this evening apart from a little grumpy.

Just for reference from NHS - he has already completed a strep A sensitive antibiotic course so very unlikely to be strep A (scarlet fever) again so soon

Scarlet fever - A&E?

@Smartiesorskittles we ended up in a&e and prescribed penicillin after the amoxicillin didn't work. I would get him checked to be on the safe side. How is he today op?

Thanks all! Called this morning & heading to our appointment now. He is better today than he has been the past few days. He has been up playing this morning and temp seems to have settled, he still has the rash and has a white coating on his tongue? Apart from that he is fine. Will see what they say.

How did you get on op?

Friedseasalt · 21/04/2024 19:46

@Helplessandheartbroke no antibiotics as he’s just finished a strong course. To see how we get on over the next few days and back to GP if he gets “worse” honestly never ending and so exhausted.

I know the feeling! Hope he perks up soon

We were in a similar situation last month - DD was really poorly with strep/scarlet fever & tonsillitis, she finished her antibiotics and seemingly recovered - then within a week I noticed rashes kept popping up again, her fever was back and she just seemed unwell again. I did take her to out of hours in the end having read horror stories about untreated/not fully treated strep. But the doctor said it was viral, that the strep had knocked her immune system for six and made her more vulnerable to other viruses. She responded well to both calpol and neurofen and was OK again in a few days. Hopefully similar for your DS!
