DS (4.5 yo) fell over at school today and has cut the palm of his hand, right down the middle where your hand creases and it looks fairly deep, but not deep enough to need stitches IYSWIM. It's about a cm long but some skin has come off at the side of it too so that's quite raw.
DH works from home so he is the first contact number as he is 2 mins away from school.
School phoned and said they had cleaned it and dressed it but they could see some dirt in it that they couldn't get out, and that it was bleeding quite a bit. They had asked if we wanted to come and try and clean it, but DH said we would wait until we got him home. This was at lunch time and he relayed this to me after speaking with school.
DS is fine but it is really sore and there is dirt in it, we have tried to wash it with warm water and have had DS soak his hand (lots of screaming) and have used wound cleaning wipes but to no avail really.
MIL is a retired nurse so has said to put a hydrocolloid plaster on it as it will draw out the dirt. I'm panicking as I think this will lead to an infection because the dirt hasn't been removed. MIL said to leave the plaster on for a couple of days to allow it to heal from the inside out. So have done as she has said but I'm not convinced. DH thinks i am over-reacting and it will be fine. We are with them on Thursday night anyway so she can have a look at it.
It's defo not an A&E job, but can't get over the fact that it's still dirty and I don't know where I would take him to get it looked at? Can't provide a pic as it is currently all wrapped up.
