Everyone in my house is sick 😷

I took my children to the urgent medical unit on Sunday as they have been coughing through the night, been really fatigued and have had a loss of appetite.

At that appointment one of my children was told they have an upper respiratory infection and its viral but they should be well enough to go back to school on Tuesday (today), they are not and are currently asleep on the sofa dosed up on paracetamol.

My other child was told that its related to her preexisting condition of acid reflux as she wasn't showing any sign of infection.

Well, no one is getting any better. My dd has been sent hone today. Me and dh have been struck down with it over night and my last remaining well child looks like they are coming down with it aswell.

This is the 1st time everyone has been sick and I've had to be night nurse whilst also dealing with the same illness, also I'm 38 weeks pregnant and shit scared that I will go into labour whilst everyone is ill.

I phoned the GP just now and they only have 2 appointments this week for us. One on Thursday and one on Friday.

I don't know what this illness is and I have no one to help us.

Does anyone have a clue?

I feel like on Thursday I will get told it's viral and to just carry on with fluids and rest.

Have you tested for Covid? Our household has come down with it, and been a bit unnerved at how quickly everything unraveled.

It may well be a case of just getting through it with rest, fluids and paracetamol. Can you WhatsApp nursery or school friends to ask for a supply drop of essentials?

Have you got temperatures under control? If everyone is just fatigued and grotty, surviving on tinned soup for a few days will be ok.

I've had covid before and it doesn't feel like that though. I will get some tests

In the past I've asked our chemist, asked the school as well so you could try that.

What rotten luck with you being pregnant

There is a horrible cold going around. There's not much you can do but fluids / rest all you can / paracetamol. Doesn't really make a difference if it's Covid or not to be honest so not sure why you'd waste time testing. I've had it, it's really shit.

I feel really bad. I feel like I'm breathing faster and every time I cough I have stress incontinence.

I've barely eating today, same as everyone else really. My last child is pushing through but I can hear him sniffing like he's coming down with something.

I have a fetal medicine appointment tomorrow which I'm going to have to force myself to go to with a maternity pad on probably.

I'm currently trying to drink a honey tea and eat an egg custard tart!

Are you and the kids all vaccinated for whooping cough?

Probably goes without saying but it would be a good idea for you to wear a mask when you go to your appointment tomorrow.

Mumstheword37 · 08/03/2024 16:52

How are you all doing OP?

rosao · 08/03/2024 16:56

Lots of whooping cough around and the vaccine seems rather short lived.

Unfortunately the antibiotics for it are only effective in the first few weeks and only shorten the contagious period, they don't help with symptoms really.

If chests are clear and no other signs of an infection I'd bet it's that. Unfortunately it's long lasting and all you can do is ride it out.

How are you all doing OP?

Hey just got back in bed from refilling my daughters wax melt burner with Olbas oil and vicks, she was coughing really bad.

No one was getting any better so on Thursday I made 4 online requests with my GP, DH is registered with a different GP so I couldn't do one for him.

They gave my oldest son an appointment that day at 7.50pm at the local urgent care centre. We took him and he got diagnosed with a secondary bacterial infection after a virus which is mostly because of his ear pain and coughing yellow/green phlegm. He got prescribed Amoxicillin, which felt like such a relief that finally we were getting somewhere.

They gave my daughter an appointment yesterday morning and she got diagnosed with the same.

My middle ds, who was just starting to show signs the other day had an appointment this morning and they said that he isn't showing signs of secondary infection yet so they won't be prescribing him anything, I said to them that it will probably follow the same pattern, but they said to bring him back when it does. Its a bit frustrating but hey ho.

For myself, they prescribed me simple cough syrup on Thursday. But my ear pain and coughing hasn't stopped so I made an online request today and got seen earlier on and got prescribed antibiotics for a secondary infection.

So far, it feels the same as everyone is waiting for it to kick it.

My dh unfortunately seems to be getting no help. He phoned his GP first thing in the morning for an appointment as they only give emergency appointments when you phone at 8am. They offered him next Wednesday. I tried to do an online 111 request for him but it kept on returning that he should self-care at home, which I was quite surprised about as everyone else was given a nurse call back last week. So he phoned 111 and got told to drink plenty of fluids and eat citrus fruits! He has the same thing as all of us and needs antibiotics, he explained everything on the phone and how we have been diagnosed with a secondary infection but they won't budge.

I can hear him on the sofa moaning as he is breathing as he is in pain. I think he will have to go to A&E or something.

I need him better the most if I'm honest as I'm 38 weeks pregnant and will be relying on him a lot.

This is definitely the longest we have all been ill.
