Dimple and tuft of hair / spina bifid worry

Hi all

Please can I ask for your experience with this? Feeling a little worried now. Took my newborn for his 6 week check and the GP noticed a tuft of hair and a small dimple so has referred us for an ultrasound

We don't have a date for the scan so will just need to wait for a letter. In the meantime though I was wondering if your child had the same thing and everything turned out okay developmentally?

Trying my absolute hardest to not overthink

Tia x

Sorry no experience of this but bumping for you xx

If you mean sacral dimple (base of spine), my son has one. There is a window and it was picked up too late for the testing (from what I remember over 10 years ago). He is fine and my nephew has it and is fine too, so probably hereditary.

I hope all goes well.

If it was SB it would likely have been picked up at the baby check by the paediatric doctors before you came home from hospital.

My dd1 had Spina Bifida Occulta, which doesn't break the skin but had a deep dimple (need to be very thorough cleaning up after a poonami!) and a wee tuft of hair. It's never bothered her and she'll be 24 in a month!

DD had thr dimple, although no hair. GP wanted it checked out but all was fine. I assume the Paediatricians would pick it up when they do the newborn check if they were worried.

I have spina bifida occulta and I'm in my late 40's now. Never stopped me doing anything except maybe wear a bikini when I was younger.

I have spina bifida occulta.
A lot of people have it and don't even know. Mine was picked up incidentally on an xray for something else.
AFAIK it's usually symptomless. It certainly is for me.

Thank you @FindingMeno we have an appointment tomorrow for an ultrasound (came through quicker than expected) so fingers crossed it's the same for us too!

My mum had spina bifida. I have a dimple.
Dh pointed it out as I never realised it was a thing. All fine here.

Thank you @Rowgtfc72 yes I have heard from the sonographer today, you can go many years without realising you even have it! All turned out well and no issues thank goodness 😀
