When she is feeling unwell or when she is angry. She said it's so loud that she cant concentrate or talk. She is 7 yo and we have wandered for a while if she may have ADHD as she struggles to sit still / not shout / regulate her emotions etc.

Has anyone else had this?

I don't know if I should be concerned? I've found a couple of online posts and some say it's part of normal development.

My 6 year old hears a bad voice in her head telling her to do things, sometimes it overpowers the good side. Apparently.

Googling tells me too that it’s probably normal too!

As an aside, she is a query for inattentive ADHD, her brother is confirmed combined type but she is much more subtle, I’m on the fence as I think she deflects attention as she finds school hard.

She is probably just describing her thoughts to you. Angry - a bit 'arghhhhhhhh', Unwell and head pounding - 'unpleasant noise!' etc etc.

Is there any chance it could be tinnitus? Long shot but mine could be described as screaming at a push. What made me think it is that it is definitely worse when I am unwell or tired, quite possibly when stressed too I guess. It’s like it flares up when I’m depleted in some way.

Newuser75 · 03/01/2024 20:34

I was thinking tinnitus too actually.

My son was 8 when he complained of this. We've been through CAHMs and come out of the other side with an ADHD diagnosis. He still suffers high anxiety levels, especially at night but is high functioning and it seems the voices have now gone. They said children's brains are plastic and these things are often phases. I'm very glad we got the help.

Thank you, I hadn't thought of tinnitus but just looked it up and it says there is a link to anxiety which would make sense?

Tinnitus, mine gets completely deafening when I'm angry, stressed or ill.

My 8 year old says the same thing, he has a good and a bad person shouting telling him what to do. He has adhd and autism

I don't think if you're saying tinnitus you know what this is.
I had this from maybe about age 6 until my mid 20s.
It's literally like someone screaming in your head.
Thinking about it now I would guess it would have been anxiety / self-hatred related.
It's great your daughter asked you about it, I remember feeling very ashamed about it and scared, too scared to talk to anyone.
I often wonder now if as a very young child I had been exposed to someone screaming because very angry? Could that be relevant?

Nubnut · 26/01/2024 11:59

I would love to learn more about this if anyone has any knowledge?

dingdongwalla · 26/01/2024 12:09

It's fairly common.
