Wondering if normal before I ring midwife . My 8 day old is formula fed aptamil . She had been pooping regularly until yesterday she hasn’t had any more dirty nappies just wet ones , kicking her legs and seems uncomfortable like she’s trying to push one out . She also has reflux don’t know if that’s a factor .

If she doesn’t go today I’d ring tomorrow, unless she looks really uncomfortable

24 hours isn’t too bad, have you tried bicycling her legs for her? Have her poos so far been soft in consistency?

Oldthyme · 28/10/2023 11:40

Would she take tepid boiled (therefore sterile) water? Maybe some extra fluid would help?

@riotlady Yeah I’ve tried bicycle legs , she seems settled atm but sometimes will kick her legs and strain . When she has pooped they’ve been soft . I haven’t tried boiled water @Oldthyme but been told not to do that with a baby so young .

If poops are soft then she’s not constipated, if she’s having her milk fine and doing wees I wouldn’t be worried tbh, but there’s nothing wrong with calling midwife/health visitor to make sure. It’s nerve wracking being a new mum!

It is normal for new babies to cry and strain a bit when they poo so don’t be alarmed if she does- again it doesn’t mean she’s constipated, it just takes a while to get the hang of the whole pooping process (you have to push AND relax, it’s complicated!) so a lot of babies get tense and do the pushing side of things, but they haven’t quite nailed the muscle control needed to relax

My daughter had medication induced constipation and we used the "colic, wind and constipation" massage routine 3 times a day.
It was 3 sets of 6 count water wheel A crunch knees to the tummy for count of ten then 6 count sum and moon crunch knees to the tummy for another 6 count. Cuddle then restart. With the 3rd set we usually got lots of wind and then little pellets that we had to help her pass. We ultimately ended up on lactulose which is a mild stool softener

The I love you massage routine can help too.
