Calpol/ ibuprofen syringes 😢what did I do ?!

So I was giving my son calpol and ibuprofen due to high temperature . He is 4 years old so he takes 2 syringes of calpol and 1 1/2 for the other. I realised when I gave him the first 5ml of calpol and then the next 5ml, I put the same syringe back to the medicine bottle without washing. I have been doing it for a while now. I am worried sick I caused cross contamination and especially I used it abroad when he had bad stomach bug. Can reusing syringes in the same bottle without washing cause ill effect.

I always wash and clean after every use but I don’t clean when I give 5ml followed by 5ml. I hope I am making sense !

I've never once cleaned in between the 2 5ml doses, absolutely zero issues

Hermittrismegistus · 13/10/2023 01:44

I've also never washed the syringe when measuring 2x 5ml and had no issues.

I didn't even realise you should wash it

Calpol contains preservatives, ie anti-microbial and anti-fungal agents to stop it spoiling.
I'd say most people use it like you. I know I did with no issues.

Did this loads of times with no issue before I started to have the same concern especially once I had two DC who might need calpol in quick succession. Save up syringes and then you can keep a couple in the box / handy, and use one after another to give the calpol.

I don't think you need to worry, but I always fill two syringes before I start giving it to DC.

Medicines in general are QC tested for sterility with this in mind. Don’t worry about too much 🙂
