Ear infection 3yo - anyone done ear swab before?

Hi all,

My son is 3.5 and never really suffered with his ears. He started complaining of earache in his left ear yesterday afternoon. I booked a drs app this morning as he had a bad night and I wanted him assessed as he has no other symptoms other than a temperature, no runny nose etc. GP said he thinks it’s bacterial or fungal rather than viral and asked me to do an ear swab in reception. I have done an ear swab but nothing really come out. It was dry even though I swabbed inside. Does anyone know if this will still show up with a result or if likely to be inconclusive? GP has prescribed some anti bacterial spray to take 3 times a day in the mean time to keep the infection at bay as my son has a bit of a temperature being kept down by ibprofen and calpol. Has anyone had a similar experience with their child? He’s booked a follow up for next Tuesday once the lab results are back to decide which treatment but this seems a long time away considering he has a temperature and has fallen asleep in the afternoon (not like him!) Thanks
