How do you know if your baby is properly ill or just a cold??

Please don’t tell me to trust my instincts because I know from experience that they’re terrible 😅😅 I always assume the worst and therefore always second guess myself because I know I’m usually wrong.

He is almost a year old. He’s had a runny nose for a week, which I thought was just a cold, but now today he suddenly has a temperature (38.3) which has come down to 37.9 with paracetamol.

Normally when he has a temperature he still runs about as usual - he’s a very, very active boy and walked early. However, for the first time ever he just seems listless and lethargic. He just wants to lie on the sofa and watch TV. Normally he won’t sit still for more than a minute at a time. He’s actually just fallen asleep watching TV, which is unprecedented - I normally have to fight to get him to nap, he’ll literally stay awake for 8+ hours unless I breastfeed and rock him to sleep.

Earlier his hands felt cold. They’re better now but still a bit cooler than usual compared to his temperature.

Whenever I’ve called 111 in the past we’ve been into hospital which he despises and hung around for ages and done tests only to be sent home. I don’t want to drag him out to hospital if it’s not necessary. Should I call 111 or not?

I have a baby same age and from everything you have said I would call 111

I'd call 111 or just go and get him seen. Always better to be safe ♥️

His temp isnt really a concern. I don't worry unless it's nudging 40 and over.

If they're drinking and peeing and painkillers can bring the temp down a bit then I just watch and wait.

However that's just me because I'm there in front of the kid. None of us can see your baby and if you're worried there's no harm in getting it checked out

Thank you, he seems a bit better after his nap and he’s been walking around and not wanting to just sit there any more. His temperature has come down with paracetamol and ibuprofen now. He’s eaten pretty well. Still quite whingey but ok.

So I haven’t called 111 yet. I’ll see how he goes.
