My little boy had a runny nose which caused a cough that went on for months, some weeks it would appear to be getting better but then it would just get worse again, it didn’t clear up for months. During this time I took him to the drs twice and they said his chest was clear no infection and that it would likely just be viral. After so long I took him back and they said his chest didn’t sound so clear on one side so they prescribed antibiotics and given it had gone on for so long. After the antibiotics it actually did clear up … for a month ! The streaming nose started again on Monday and now the cough is back 😩 has anyone else experienced anything like this?! I don’t know if there could be more to it or what to do. Potentially an allergy/hay fever but how can this be confirmed? I will take back to drs but just wondering if anyone has been through something similar, I feel bad for him constantly having his nose streaming and coughing all the time, it disturbs his sleep aswell

Try an antihistamine to see if it stops it. Then look at post nasal drip.
Is there any asthma in his family ?

Redw · 23/08/2023 07:31

Thank you, we have been giving antihistamine since yesterday morning it didn't stop the running yesterday but will persist today and see if it helps. He does have asthma in the family, not from either parent but his uncle and nan both have asthma

What about food allergies ? Do you have any air fresheners in the house, or candles, or anything strong smelling ?

WtfHormones · 23/08/2023 07:34

Has he just started nursery? If so hes probs just catching every bug going.

It sounds a bit like the perennial allergic rhinitis I had as a child (1960s) that was dismissed as 'that child always has a cold.' It was miserable and I had it well into my teens. Don't know what the treatment is because no-one was bothered enough to get me any, but for your little boy's sake speak to the doctor and see what can be done about it

No food allergies that we know of yet. We don't have any air fresheners or anything that's constant. Maybe candles here and there but it's not constant or often. My wife is big on cleaning so there's minimal dust etc

Does she use smelly cleaning products ? A lot of people use those high.y fragranced sprays, like Mrs.Hinch.
anyway, once you’ve thought about that I think that you’d be well within your rights to ask for an ENT referral.

He's been going to nursery for almost 8 months now, I know they all had coughs at one point and that was around the time he actually had antibiotics and it cleared up. He doesn't show any other signs of a cold or feeling under the weather, it's literally just a streaming nose that then turns into a cough aswell

Yeah I'm afraid I think it's normal. Both my kids were constantly snotty for the first year that they started nursery. It will settle down soon when their immune system builds

Wondering if you ever got to the bottom of this? Seems my son has similar. We have been investigating it since he was about 1 - now he is 4, nearly 5, and we are no closer to a solution. He has had maximum therapies for suspected asthma, no avail. Chest always clear. Consultant took him off asthma therapies. How on antihistamine and flixonase nasal spray since January. No real difference. Poor child is tortured. Always viral triggered (a simple cold sets it off) and always the same reaction.
