He’s ebf and used to go a few times a day; we started weaning him a few weeks ago and they dropped to one and got less and less .. he went 3 days last week but this is the longest. I mentioned it to he gp when I had a telephone appt for myself today and he prescribed laxative and said probably constipated. The last couple stools have definitely but thicker more like a mr whippy ice cream than the usual soups but definitely not hard or anything.

any other ideas or would you go with the laxatives ?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Have you tried pears? I sweared by them
pretty much every day with my two. If not the other Ps - plums, peaches, prunes. Lots of water, warm water if possible.

Naggynails · 17/07/2023 19:40

Go drive over a very bumpy road for half an hour

Ostryga · 17/07/2023 19:41

Sounds normal to me. Is he in any visible pain? Any temp? If it’s not full liquid with small hard stools I wouldn’t worry too much.

Dd used to go days on end and then do an absolutely horror poo, usually at a very inopportune time for added fun.

Charlotteap · 17/07/2023 19:45

@Mintearo7 tried him on a small amount of prunes today but will try pears thank you !

@Naggynails aha we have a hospital appt quite far away tomorrow so will be our look to happen in the car seat

@Ostryga thank you he’s definitely fine in himself, he mastered rolling a couple weeks ago and that’s all he’s been doing for a week ending up at the other side of the room, so definitely well. Last week when he went a few days it was biggest nappy fill I’ve ever seen so hoping the same Is happening this time

Definitely try plums (plum purée) and tons and tons of water? What food are you giving him? He should still be having mostly veg and a bit of fruit at this stage.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 17/07/2023 19:49

Id be offering sips of water.
The prune pouches you get from Tesco own brand or Ella's kitchen. Or even better a bag of the dried ones, soak in water then pulse and spoon feed.

Kiwis also good.

But from experience keep a big eye on this as my firstborn was constipated and a baby but I left it over two weeks numerous times because "breastfed babies dont get constipated" and it still has consequences now he is about to be 4.

Charlotteap · 17/07/2023 20:07

@LiloP thank you we have only done veggies / fruits so far. We give sips of water with his food should I be giving him water just throughout the day too? He loves drinking the water and would drink the full cup if I let him.

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy i actually have an Ella’s kitchen prune pouch so will definitely give him that tomorrow. Thank you , I hope it’s not too serious but I will definitely keep an eye and try the the laxatives in a couple more days for sure

I can’t remember the guideline re water but I think it’s ok to let him drink if he wants to throughout the day, especially if it’s hot in your area.

the prune pouch is a great idea, that should help move things.

justanotherlaura · 17/07/2023 20:31

Is he maybe moving to food poo from milk poo? My son went 6 days without a poo then did all 6 days worth on one go, his first properly solid poo. Did the same thing again and I was starting to worry he'd be on a 6 day cycle then he started going most days. Hopefully it's just a transition period for him. This happened the week we started giving him 3 meals a day

Naggynails · 17/07/2023 20:59

Ours had this issue...bumpy car ride to hospital 30 mins did it...still gave her a glucose suppository as she just incase... mega embarrassing as she'd pood the minute we were assigned a bed for her 😆

Honestly I wouldn't even wait with the laxatives. The word that can happen is you get a big sloppy poop.
But to leave it and build up stretches the bowel and that can take a while to reduce down again in the meantime more poo is forming and it's just a bad cycle to get into.
Better out than in!

@justanotherlaura thats what I was hoping and that’s what the health visitor thought when I phoned her , said its a lot of getting used to. The first two weeks of weaning they were worryingly green then went to a darker colour and have now just got less and less. It’s the 3rd time he’s gone more then 3 days and when they did come they were still very loose so HV doesn’t think he’s constipated per se.

@Naggynails we have a car ride to the hospital tomorrow too 😂 I wouldn’t mind a poo explosion in the car seat as long as he goes !

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy thank you , I have the prescription just need to pick it up. I think it is movicol sachets so not sure how that would work, try and give him it via water?

He just had the biggest explosion I’ve ever seen ( typically after ordering all the p fruits 😅 they will last for next time)

all up his baby bjorn, I swear it reached his shoulders. Then once I unchanged him he cleared all the room and got it all over the carpet. I’m just pleased he’s gone as we have a busy day out tomorrow!

thanks everyone for the advice
