Teen with gallstones?

Has anyone any experience of this? My 16 year old is waiting for a scan but the doctor has ruled out pretty much everything else. In the meantime, he is losing weight, feeling sick, full up quickly etc. He has had every other test under the sun which has come back normal. I’ve not known anyone this young have them before, so wondering what the likelihood is.

I haven’t but does he drink enough water throughout the day?

I think so, he has a water bottle at school and also has a pint of water on the go all the time at home.

Goodness that is very young! If his diet is high in carbs then it’s very likely it could be gallstones.

Is he eating low fat at the moment for the pain?

OrangeSofa1 · 08/07/2023 09:51

He doesn’t have any pain, just sickness and weight loss. Family history of gallstones at a young age (20s) but as I said, waiting for an ultrasound to rule it out. Because as the doctor said, she is baffled! If it isn’t gallstones we are back to square 1!

Hello can I ask you what tests your son has had so far?

OrangeSofa1 · 09/07/2023 17:40

@Lbet various bloods, stool test, tests for coeliac and an endoscopy!

I had mine out at 14, but I’m female and the consultant said it can sometimes happen when you start your periods and hormone fluctuations. I had a good diet as a child and never suffered with high cholesterol so it could be hormones but don’t know if it works the same in males and hormones.

2 of my teen boys have gallstones, but it’s due to a blood condition (hs) they have. One of them got their gallbladder out recently. The other they are keeping an eye on as the gallstones aren’t annoying them atm.

I was recently in hospital and there was a teenaged girl in the same ward with gallstones. I had no idea young people could be affected.

So it could be a possibility…. Thanks all. I’ll come back and update after the scan!
