Strep A - how long did your kids take to recover?

Hello,
DD (16mo) came down with a fever on Tuesday evening. By Wednesday evening I knew something wasn’t right so called 111 who had her seen immediately at hospital - they very quickly diagnosed her with suspected strep A and gave us antibiotics.

The doctor said that she should improve fairly quickly and not to worry if she gets the classic rash because she’s already on the right course of treatment.

it’s now Saturday so she’s been on the antibiotics for 72h. She’s slightly better in that her fever is mostly gone and she’s starting to eat a bit more, but she still seems really miserable and poorly, and now she has the rash. She’s sneezing and has a runny nose now so I’m wondering if she’s being hit with a virus too.

Just looking for some reassurance really - how long does it usually take for them to feel better in themselves after starting the antibiotics?

For us it was probably 4 days post antibiotics before we saw a significant improvement. But DS was still quite run down for approx 2 weeks after. Such a terrible dose, DS has had a lot of sickness since starting creche tonsillitis, ear infections etc but this was the worst by far. Hope your DD starts to feel better soon.

thank you so much for replying - that’s reassuring to hear ! Hopefully she’ll feel more herself tomorrow.
We are exactly the same - she (and we) have been repeatedly sick since she started nursery. Most of the time I can tell myself it will do her immune system good in the long run, but things like this just feel scary (especially with it being in the news lately).

I actually didn't read up on Strep A until after recovery & was glad i didn't or I would have been terrified. I hope you see more of an improvement tomorrow, so hard seeing our babies unwell.

It’s awful isn’t it ! She’s quite up and down today - moments when I think “yep she seems like she’s on the mend” and then moments when I think “do I need to call 111 again?!” We’re keeping a very close eye on her poor little poppet.
