6yo one hot cheek (and a few other symptoms)

Dd6 has been under the weather for a few days. Not quite doctor-worthy, but I'm surprised she's not getting better yet.

Symptoms:

Sore throat - swollen red tonsils, but no white spots.

Temperature a little elevated, max. temp 38' - mainly mid 37s.

One very red and hot cheek - her molars have mainly come through, doesn't seem to have any teething pain.

Hot to touch on forehead - but aside from one cheek and forehead, she is normal temp to touch everywhere else (chest, abdomen, back, etc).

Glands are not raised.

LFT negative.

No rash or skin mottling.

Mood a little impacted, but energy levels normal.

Eating, drinking, pooing, weeing as normal.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Following only as my dd6 is exactly
the same!
only difference is she is also saying things taste different so isn’t eating as much ☹️

Could it be slapped cheek? My kids all had it. It’s a nasty virus.

I hope your DD feels better soon.

It's a strange one - but maybe because we're all so focused on illnesses with a name, we've kinda forgotten that generic viruses are a thing.

I wondered that, but should we expect it to be both cheeks?

It's the one side hot/one side normal thing that's throwing me.

My DD always gets one hot cheek when she's got a virus of any sort. She's had slapped cheek too & that's very obvious, it was both of her cheeks & they were excessively red & blotchy.

Actually just thought of one other difference as my one has been hotter at 39.2 but she always fevers high so not unusual at all for her.

I was pleased that DD's temp has been reasonable so far, she too can raise a raging fever out of nowhere.

But then, at her bedtime I realised the thermometer was reading a bit low (it showed my temp in the 35s) so I suspect hers got up to 39ish too.

My main concern is how swollen her tonsils are. She's eating okay, and breathing okay, but still... It makes me a bit nervous that there's so little space back there.

@Gawdknows her one hot cheek is super red. But the other... Entirely normal.

There should be a special word for the low level stress you feel when your ill child is asleep, and you're just hoping they wake up feeling better.

It’s like you’re reading my mind!
if you ever find or make up that word- let me know it please as I COULD NOT agree more xx

How is your dd today? X

Todaynotalways · 07/05/2023 21:50

I was wondering the same about yours @wobblymum1 - how is she?

I think she's getting better, throat seems less red and swollen, her cheek is less hot - she appeared to be basically fine, we took her temperature mid afternoon, just out of curiosity, and it was still nearly 38' which was a real surprise given how much better she seems.

What's really strange is that her temp under her arm and on her forehead are normal, it's just under her tongue that it's still elevated.

Under arm: 36' - expected as armpit temperature is usually lower than other places.
Forehead: 36.7 - fine, barely elevated.
Tongue 37.9' - weird.

Either way, hopefully she's on the tail end of whatever it is.

that is odd with the temperatures! Though I do often find even one ear is different to the other 🤷‍♀️I only have the ear one so not sure about the others. im so glad your one is feeling better today and sounds like it’s mewrly
over.
my dd ate more today and went out and about 👍but was easily
upset late afternoon after going out for a while
and her temp was up at 38 so still not right. She’s very restless now tho and has already been up once sneezing and struggling to get back down despite nurofen.
i can’t really see her tonsils-
i think they are swollen but lack of pus makes me think a go appt will be pointless and as she’s now sneezing I’m thinking it’s viral.
just wish temp would stay down! Hope you all have a peaceful night X

My 5 yo had this a Few weeks ago. The first few days were similar, symptom wise, to what you described and then started to complain of a sore cheek/chin. That night his glands were massive- crazy big. It ended up being strep A.

hope your DD is better soon!

wobblymum1 · 08/05/2023 20:32

Ah thanks. I noticed in bath tonight her left neck lymph nodes are swollen and that’s the side she’s complaining is sore. Temp sitting stubbornly at 37.8 and normal when on calpol / nurofen. But she seems better in herself today with more normal energy levels.

Sorry to hear your DD was glandy! How is she today?

Mine is largely better I think (touch wood). We took her to the GP yesterday as she is under consultant care for recurrent ear infections, and she had complained her ear hurt.

The GP took a good look and diagnosed viral tonsillitis. So far, so better.
