Lumps on sons neck

Hey 👋 (overthinking, paranoid, need to stop googling everything and self diagnosing mother here, that needs help probably physically and mentally but I'll opt for just advice at this point 🤣)

Sorry for the really long post.. congratulations if you get to the bottom and have any advice or been through anything similar that could help me.

My son is 2, I noticed back when he was 14 months old (march last year) that he had a lump on the side of his neck.. at this time I assumed infection and just swollen gland however it never went down after a few weeks, I took him to the doctors in April 2022 and was told that this can happen with infection 🙄 I did explain it's been there for weeks but just fell upon deaf ears 😔

Anyway I took him back to the doctors for a potential chest infection around November time, and the doctor looked at him and first thing he said was "ah yes you can tell he has some sort of infection as his gland is swollen" 😅 I was like no that's been there since march and just never gone down, he then referred him for blood tests.

We had bloods done in January (not sure what bloods they tested though) but they all came back clear apart from slightly low on iron and that was that.

Anyway rolling forward to a few weeks ago, I noticed more lumps around 7 or 8 ... 2 surrounding the one he has always had, 1 at the back of his neck, 1 behind each ear, and 1 at the lower part of his head under his hair at the back, I took him back to the doctors and the doctor said she needed a second opinion from another doctor and would get back to me, I received a text from the surgery saying "please keep an on head and neck lumps and bumps and book another appointment for 3/4 weeks time" I was like what?!? The doctor didn't even know what they were and yet they're going to make me wait another 3/4 weeks?

I asked for a second opinion in person as he was playing with his left ear anyway so needed to check for ear infection also (yes he is literally always poorly but now he just gets on with it, he is such a happy little boy 99% of the time)... I was given ear spray this time around as his ear was slightly red and because he had not long had antibiotics for an ear infection a few weeks prior so I didn't want him to have anymore, but also the doctor finally referred me to whoever they have referred me to regarding said lumps...

Other symptoms I have noticed is bruising all over his legs (but he is 2 so assumed it's from all the knee sliding he has learned and in general just being a toddler) but still quite a bit more bruising than I would expect...

Extremely dry skin - the doctor has given us cream for this as aveeno cream just wasn't working and his skin feels like actual sandpaper (I put this down to seasons changing as he does suffer with hayfever allergies or so I assume given he was the same last year)

He sleeps a lot!! Has done since he was about 6 months but again because he has always been so good it's not really rang alarm bells until all these other symptoms but the other day he must have slept like 19 hours bar a half hour here and there... But that being said when he is awake he is a very active on the go toddler and always happy.. but he is also always unwell... I have 2 other children and they have never been this unwell so it's not like I'm a first time worried parent over something small 😅 that I could understand but I'm being made to feel like it's absolutely nothing to worry about and like I'm wasting time 😅 one lump I could kind of understand but several? Has anyone else gone through this?

Another symptom is his bowels... Most of the time for as long as I can remember he has had awful diarrhea but then other days it's like he is constipated but this is very rare the majority of the time it is just diarrhea (must mention there is NO blood etc in stools though)

He did have a nose bleed last week which he has never had before.. woke me up in the morning standing next to my bed covered in blood thankfully just a nose bleed as it terrified the life out of me thinking he'd hurt himself, was like something out of a horror movie 😅.. but again I put it down to hayfever season.

I just hope someone can shed some light onto what might be going on for peace of mind until I hear from whoever they've referred me to anytime between now and June and that's just for the initial phone call not an appointment..

It could well be absolutely nothing.. but it also could be something because no one can seem to tell me what's what lol!

I'm aware that this isn't a medical professionals group, just hoping maybe someone has seen something similar or going through the same and knows what it all is, I mean this is a bloody big group someone must have an idea.. just put my mind at ease whilst I'm awaiting a referral appointment to come through...

Thank you if you've managed to get this far. 🙏🥰

Sorry if Ive missed it but has he been checked for diabetes? Just going on the thirst and tiredness? If he has either a pear drop or acetone smell to his breath then get him to a&e as if it's diabetes he could be really poorly. With you saying dad is type 2 do you have a finger prick tester that you could try. He looks so poorly bless him and GP really are messing you around. I would potentially just go to a&e, even if they say they will keep him in for 24hrs obs you might actually get further than you have so far xx

Jitterybugs · 28/04/2023 13:22

Your pathetic excuse for a GP is making you doubt yourself. Please don’t dither any longer over it and make your way to A&E. if he’s only been awake for 5 hours since Wednesday then he will be seriously dehydrated and needs urgent attention. Please do as so many of us have already suggested and get to A&E and don’t leave until they’ve thoroughly checked him over.

nisham30 · 28/04/2023 13:33

Thank you all, I'm taking him up to a&e now.. I just hope they do something! Anything even if it's just giving me their opinion and actually doing some tests.. I'd be happy with them to offering to do a urine sample at this point... Xx

That’s good to hear nisham30. Stand your ground and be firm if needed. I really don’t think they will but please don’t let them send you away without a thorough check over. Be sure to tell them in addition to all his concerning symptoms he’s been so drowsy he’s only been awake for 5 hours since Wednesday. Wishing you all the best and I hope you’ll get a chance to update us later. Stay strong .

VeronicaTimeTurner · 28/04/2023 14:24

So glad you’ve taken him to A&E it’s easy to make excuses for the inept GP, oh it’s probably nothing, it’s probably just a virus, he’s probably banged his legs but whatever it is it is not normal, he’s 2 years old he should be a whirlwind of energy. I hope you can get some answers today x

GayPareeee · 28/04/2023 14:43

Just delurking to say so glad you've gone, I've been really worried but didn't want to worry you. Really hope someone listens to your concerns and investigates properly

adriftabroad · 28/04/2023 16:18

So, so pleased you[ve gone xxx

nisham30 · 28/04/2023 16:18

Just got home. We were in and out as there was noone else there in the children's bit anyway.

So doctor looked at him and said he has 'severe tonsillitis' so how was this missed with everyone else I've seen.. he is now on antibiotics 3 times a day for 7 days, they did say his eyes look sucken but suggested because his throat will be sore that he won't be eating or drinking properly, he did say that the lumps should go when antibiotics kick in... I tried to tell him that he had antibiotics not long ago and the lumps have never gone down but he is sure that they'll go this time around with the antibiotics and if they don't I'm to have him back up there....

He did say that if I thought he was getting worse I can absolutely take him back up and they'll admit him into hospital.

Xxx

Ah I'm so glad you've been seen! Please keep us updated on the progress and wishing him a speedy recovery. I bet you're so relieved x

adriftabroad · 28/04/2023 16:34

I am thrilled to hear this. Well done. Let[s hope he now starts to improve xxx

Try and rest (both of you) this weekend.x

You have done absoutely the right thing.

LindyHopathon · 28/04/2023 16:34

That's excellent, OP.
At least now you can return if there's no improvement.

dfkdfc · 28/04/2023 17:06

So glad you have been up there. And do go back if he doesn't improve. Poor little thing

Darhon · 28/04/2023 17:36

Glad he has been seen. I would still ask for a coeliac screen if it has not been done

VeronicaTimeTurner · 28/04/2023 17:54

Darhon · 28/04/2023 17:36

Definitely this, there is obviously something underlying which is why he keeps getting poorly. Hope he’s on the mend soon with the antibiotics 💐

Toddlerteaplease · 28/04/2023 18:16

I wonder if he's also got glandular fever. That often goes hand in hand with tonsillitis. The glands can remain raised for ages after that. I had one that was stated enlarged for about 15 years after I had it.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/04/2023 18:17

And also would explain why he's been unwell for so long.

nisham30 · 29/04/2023 13:30

Hey 👋

So he did his usual and slepy for 13/14 hours last night/this morning, he has been playing today though, whilst it's definitely more peace of mind for me what I don't understand is he literally and the same antibiotics not long ago for an ear infection so surely that would have helped for the tonsillitis too? But hey we will ride it out and fingers crossed it all fixes itself, I have noticed a lump today under his left eye that was the one that looked sunken yesterday is this normal? 😂 Seems to be something else daily lol xx

OP posts:
nisham30 · 29/04/2023 13:32

This is the lump under his eye today xx

OP posts:
VeronicaTimeTurner · 29/04/2023 14:53

That lump looks like an allergy almost. My friend’s eyes used to go the same after touching a cat.

If you have enough money I would be tempted to go private, get a total overhaul/screening of his body, blood tests, allergy tests, diabetes, coeliac - the lot. If you can’t afford it maybe it would be worth changing GP as you may have more luck in getting things moving. It is obvious there is some underlying cause of why he keeps getting so poorly. Poor little thing 😢

Restlessinthenorth · 29/04/2023 15:12

A lump under the eye is not tonsillitis. I am afraid I would have him back today. The rapid onset of lots of new symptoms is an indication that something is not right with your child. Do not be fobbed off

Traverser · 30/04/2023 02:40

I would also go private if necessary. I had two children (one was 8 months old the other 11 years old) who had some very similar symptoms to your son over 10 years apart and they both had a serious diagnosis (different issues). The fact it’s gone or so long and he is sleeping so much is just very concerning. I am in the USA so both times they were seen immediately and had all the testing necessary to clarify a diagnosis asap.

Do you have a Children’s Hospital within reasonable driving distance with an ER? We are very blessed with an excellent Children’s Hospital 30 minutes away.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/04/2023 09:02

@Traverser Nottingham has a large children's hospital. An hour from Lincoln. I suggested up thread that the OP ask for a referral there. I've done agency shifts in the OP's local hospital and It isn't great.

Ulezz · 01/05/2023 14:23

How’s he doing now @nisham30
Hope he’s feeling a bit brighter

poppym12 · 01/05/2023 15:01

How is he today @nisnisham30 ?

nisham30 · 01/05/2023 15:45

Hello all,
So we're day 3.5 on the antibiotics and all lumps are still there so haven't gone down like the doctor said they would but we still have another 3 days worth of the antibiotics so maybe with time can't see it myself though. He has been very unsettled today but he does seem much more like himself than he was last week but I'm still not convinced the lumps are down to the tonsillitis as like I said previously he had the same antibiotics not long ago for an ear infection he had so surely that would have cleared it all up at the same time.. but hey what do I know lol xx
