Crotch grabbing - penis 'sticking' to 5 year old?

Hi all,

I've booked a doc appointment for my son but the earliest the GP could give me for non-urgent is 2 weeks away, so asking advice from seasoned mothers of boys on here!

DS just turned 5 and pulls at his crotch constantly. This has been going on for months but has escalated a lot recently. It's not exploratory anymore or fun with his favourite toy, I think it's genuinely because he's uncomfortable. My MIL is a nurse so she's checked for signs of infection or overtight foreskin and couldn't see anything but he tells us his willy is 'sticking to him'. The only sign that something is wrong is that the topside (not the head) of his penis is red from friction where he keeps grabbing it through clothes.

We moved him to boxers, thinking perhaps his pants were too tight but no difference. We've tried applying talc around his penis in case it's sweat related, but that doesn't help either and he's too young to sweat really anyway!

Has anyone else had something like this with their sons? Any suggestions that could help while I wait for the GP? I'm getting fed up of telling him to take his hands off himself, and others are beginning to comment too... 😣

@ArtichokeAardvark

How often is he having a shower/bath?

can you try a quick shower in the mornings as well as any at night?

do his undies/PJ's have even a slight whiff of wee in the mornings or the end of the day?

Baths every evening and his PJ's usually smell pretty clean, but that's a good idea- will try it.

Have you changed laundry detergent or bath products?

Hi, did you get any help or advice from the GP about this? My 6 year old has been doing it a lot as well recently but says it's not sore/ itchy etc when I ask him why.

Wondering if you got to the bottom of this as we are having the exact same problem with ds4. We've tried 3 creams from the doctors along with a course of antibiotics. The doctor cannot work it out and neither can we!

Hi,

Did you get to the bottom of this?
Any advice for a child doing the same thing? Trying to get my 4 year old to stop but no advice so far has helped. What creams did you try?

Momasher · 08/04/2024 05:43

Hi I figured it out! My 4 year old son having the problem. I asked him to clarify and show me exactly what was wrong. It was his balls sticking to his legs. He did not know the correct term for “balls” and just called it his peepee. Most kids do not. Check that his balls are not ”sticky”… that’s probably it! We put on some cream between his testicles and leg crease with tight underwear and he feels better now.

Yes sounds the same, he says about sticking to his leg but pulls at the penis to probably lift his balls too. What cream did you use? We've tried medical talc powder but it was a mess and not sure it helped!
