Silent Reflux, Omeprazole and Carobel

Hello,
My daughter is 9 weeks now. After being back and forth with doctors, trying Apitmal Petit and Gaviscon, she was prescribed Omeprazole at 3 weeks old after having a trip in the ambulance to the childrens hospital due to a choking episode from acid coming up from her stomach.
Since starting her omeprazole, we really have noticed a massive difference. Shes gone from continuous crying for sometimes up to 3 to 4 hrs straight to really only upset when shes tired or hungry. The only symptom we really still have is that she is sick after almost every bottle. Its not massive amounts but enough to soak her clothes around her neck/shoulders. We have tried everything, we keep her upright for 30 mins (sometimes more- even at night) and sleeps elevated in a SnuzPod (with the foot provided). However she will always be sick, as soon as she is lay flat whether its to sleep/nap or have her nappy changed, she will just be spew up milk. This can still happen 2+ hours after her bottle. For example last night she had a bottle at 4am, I didnt lay her flat until 5:30am, she was sick over herself so I picked her up, got her back to sleep and put her down again around 6:30am and was sick immediately again. Can anyone help/make any recommendations on what to do?
I’m considering bringing in Carobel to her bottles, but not sure if this will have any adverse effects because she is mostly content now and read that Carobel can sometimes cause constipation. She is currently on Kendamil and my health visitor said this is quite a watery formula - which I haven’t seen anyone else mention, does anyone else know whether this is true?

I have had two with bad reflux and unfortunately in my experience them bringing up milk is something you have to get used to.
The omeprazole doesn't keep anything down, it neutralises the stomach acid so it doesn't hurt them when it comes up. Anything you can give them manages the reflux, it doesn't fix it. We ended up using a combination of omeprazole and reflux milk (which basically just has the carobel mixed in). Even with this DC could bring up milk hours after his feeds.

Try thickening their milk on top of giving the omeprazole but also invest in some decently thick bibs and a ton of muslins. Layering bedding with waterproof sheets in between means you can change the bed quickly at night if they're very sick. It's grueling and relentless at times, but it does get better. My youngest is 8 months and we've stopped the omeprazole and should be able to stop the thick milk soon.

Thanks! Yes I agree the omeprazole doesnt stop the sickness but my doctor is pushing this on me. He has told me to up the dosage which I just don’t think will work as you said it stops acid rather than the sickness.

i will definitely look into thicker milks and maybe try carobel for the time being.

yes, my house has so many bibs and muslins in every room and have them coming out of every bag and jacket pocket I have haha! Hopefully it eventually settles! I am really reluctant to keep her on omeprazole for longer than she needs it

OP, how did you get on with Carobel? My LO is going through this now and on pepti1 that is so thin I can hear the silent reflux the she screams. She's on Lansoprazole but hoping Carobel is the miracle cure...

@LH93 hello, a little update; we tried carobel and our daughter screamed and screamed with constipation. She is a baby who will go around the same time each and every day. The second day we started carobel, we went to put her down to bed and she was in agony screaming with constipation so we immediately stopped it. The annoying thing was we actually noticed a difference and it actually helped with the sickness but we would have been swapping one thing for another really, ie the sickness for constipation and because the sickness does not bother her at all we thought its best to let her be sick than be in pain.
We also tried reflux milk (which in my opinion is so disgusting and I was sooo concerned about giving her it). I couldn’t stop thinking about what it was doing in her tummy after seeing it solidifying into a jelly. We tried it and she was actually sick like 6 times in the same hour which was actually worse than before she started it, so again we stopped it.

Oh that's such a shame. It's so hard having a reflux baby and not knowing how to help. Roll on weaning!

I've read both good and bad outcomes for the Carobel, so we're going to try it and keep our fingers crossed. Our LO doesn't sick a lot but you can hear the acid come up and then she swallows it down so hoping Carobel prevents that (and doesn't give her constipation).

I hope you find what works for you and your LO soon x
