I have health anxiety so am trying to stay rational and calm with all of the strep a news around.
DS 5 and a half has had a snotty cold for 2 days, no temp just lots of sneezing sniffling and a churning cough.
Well in himself.
Has woke this morning and said his throat hurts, we've looked at his tongue and throat and it looks ok.
How do we know if it's a sore throat from just having a cold or strep a?
I'm so anxious.

I wouldn't worry unless he got a high temperature.

The illness that is making people extremely poorly is igas- a rare occurrence after catching strep a, so that is the first thing to help quash your anxieties a little. Secondly
google the symptoms of strep a- it’s a sudden and high temperature, very sore red throat, lethargy, nausea/vomiting, muscle aches and chills, very red sandpaper rash. Google what these actually look like and compare ds.

if he does have these symptoms then simply book him either an out of hours gp appointment or wait until tomorrow morning and book an urgent appointment. If he goes more downhill in the meantime tell yourself “ok I will book the out of hours gp if his temperature hits 40” etc

it is really treatable but good to be aware.

Strep throat is unmistakeable, it comes on very quickly, when you look at the throat it's blotchy red with possibly white spots. VERY high temp. Nausea and vomiting.x
