DS had tonsillitis almost two weeks ago and had a course of Penicillin V prescribed 5ml four times daily for 5 days. We missed two doses for a fay each so he ended up taking the course over 6 days. He finished the course and the pain and sore throat came back right after finishing so the doctor did another 7 days and we are on fay 4 of that course now.
I'm just so worried about him taking antibiotics for such a long time! It's going to be 14 days straight when he finishes. Is it safe? Anyone else had antibiotics for their children for so long or one after the other?

pen V is usually a 5-10 day course. Won’t do any harm to take for a few extra days. Might get some diarrhoea as it gets rid of the good as well as bad bacteria so might be worth having some probiotics

My DS has been on several different types of ABs over several months when he was born and he is absolutely fine. 2 weeks isn't very long. I hope he feels better soon.

What exactly are you worried about?

Clairewilliams07 · 31/07/2022 22:43

My boys were the same but with my 6 year old they were prescribed for 2weeks (penicillin the red one)

It's fine. Don't worry

Not great for their gut biome so probiotics are something worth looking at but it won’t do any lasting damage
